As the Gulf Island that's closest to Vancouver, Bowen Island is a hip place to live and a pleasure for visitors. You can take a short ferry to Bowen Island from Horseshoe Bay, so it's a very do-able daytrip for Vancouver residents and tourists.
Before televisions and cars replaced the dancehalls and the picnics, Bowen Island was a rollicking resort destination. Steamships going back and forth, packed with well dressed folks, and all that. These days, there's more room at the beach and you can get a better cappuccino.
I recommend walking around Killarney Lake.
