I am really hoping that the sale of harewood elementary does not go through and this "soup kitchen" stays the hell out of my neighborhood.
Our neighborhood just rallyed together to get a drug house evicted and out of our neighborhood.
Why do we want this in a neighborhood? beside a preschool? This is bulls**t.
I'm not being patronizing at all when asking this:
Why would you oppose a place that provides food for families that cannot afford their own?
I can understand not wanting a drug house, but isn't this a place for underprivilaged families to go get one of their basics human rights - food?
In our world of excess, we can't allow a community service like this to exist in our neighbourhoods?
I'm just confused.

We all want our world, country, city and especially our neighbourhoods free of having to provide for those less fortunate or unable to look after themselves. But those that need those soup kitchens are not going anywhere soon and need a place to go to.
Where would you suggest we put a soup kitchen? Where you aware that at least three regular users of the 7-10 club live within a block of ex-Harewood Elementary Twenty-Four Hours a Day/Seven Days a Week. Perhaps we can suggest they move out of your precious neighbourhood.
But seriously, to compare a soup kitchen to a drug house? That's not fair![/COLOR]
its not the free food that i am apposed to, its the problems that having this in this neighborhood will bring.
Why do you think they got kicked out of the church? People that lived near the church they were in said they would come home to find people smoking crack in there back alleys.
Thats the kind of "problems" I don't want my family around.
And if I can prevent it. I will.
You know it's really simple to say" let the 710 club help people....bla bla bla..." but really if it was in your back yard, I'm sure that you'd have the same opinion as me.

Why don't you volunteer at the soup kitchen when and if it does open so that you can help to ensure the "problems" that may occur, don't. What better way to keep an eye on things than being involved? Who better than someone such as yourself who is already aware of the potential "dangers" to help ensure the place runs smooth and clean and becomes a shining example of how a community participates in the happenings and operation of their neighborhood? With you involved, how could it possibly become a negative?

It wouldn't bother me if the soup kitchen was next door to my residence. It's not like it's a crack shack or anything.
Food should be a right. We should not have to demand it. And people shouldn't have to fight so hard to get food for the poor. I know there are abuses of the system. But then there are people who really need the help. I'm talking about the physically and mentally ill. $800.00/month from Social Assistance just doesn't cut it these days, especially in Nanaimo where the average rent is about that much.

As with many groups of people, it's usually the actions of a few that ruin it for the majority.
I'm not sure that focussing on those individuals who abuse the system is the right thing to do. Should we ignore all the rest of the good work that is being done?
And if there are a few "problem" abusers, let's address those specifically in an open and frank forum. Maybe the soup kitchen could ban those particular offenders, and contact the police when they come around? I'm sure not EVERYONE using this wonderful service smoke crack in the back alleys.

Honestly, I have the same kind of compassion towards you as I have compassion towards those who do not have access to food.
Love, tolerance, and compassion are also basic human rights, that I'm afraid you are starving in. So I honestly hope you find some.
If people are hungry in my neighbourhood, I would hope that I would open my own home to them, nevermind turn to some other organization to do the good work "in my back yard".

You really must not fear about things you think might happen these people are no different than you and I. They are just looking for a place to eat and socialize and regardless the place they are looking at to buy is already zoned for what they want to use it for. I doubt if you can stop it if the sale is approved[/B]
Wow, I can't believe there are people in this world who think like this!
As a kid, I was in a less fortunate family who on occasion, had to go to the "soup kitchen", as you so call it. It not only helped us, but encouraged us to keep fighting, and the volunteers are not only helpful, but also caring, and responsible in what they do! I encourage the 7-10 club to move wherever they think would be best for those in need, and I will back them up in any decision they make.
I really like Soda's suggestion.
Anyway, I wanted to say that I personally know one of the head organizers of the 7-10 club (no names) and the bit that the newspapers seem to not have mentioned is that the club was paying the church rent.
Also, I always wonder how people think the world will get better if they stand in the way of helping it become so. There is risk in anything you do, and even the things you don't do. It's silly to expect everyone else to fix the world's problems. You know, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Congratulation to all those that serve in organizations that reach out to help others.:D
Concern poverty, it can happen to us all. Sometimes, for the middle class family all it takes is sudden unemployment or sickness, then even your average family could be one step away from poverty row.

I haven't heard anything about the 7-10 club lately. Does anyone know what the latest developments are?
Rather that debating over which location soup style kitchens should not be at, maybe there should be one in all regions of the city.

Actually, the LACK of food usually leads to more crime than a supportive soup kitchen. Poverty is a reality. Calling it a drug house is way off base, perhaps some clients there may use drugs and they may be mentally ill. This doesn't mean they don't deserve basic rights. We all live in this world.
For a whole year these 7-10 clients have walked by my home and none of them really give me any trouble. They talk a bit loud early in the morning as they go by but no big deal they are harmless.
There are a few black and white persons in the world who ar unable to see a situation for its many colors and shades of grey. I hope your fear and intolerance fade a bit and you find it in your heart to accept the fact that food is essential.The Kitchen is going in my neighborhood too, and my first thought was how convenient for dropping off donations. Good to see the School put to some good use too. Have you any idea how fragile we are and how quickly a familly doing o.k. can start to go hungry? We were celebrating community kindness on one thread and here we see more intolerance over here. Just promise you"ll write back if things arent as bad as you fear.
Another back up to the soup kitchen being in the backyard of those near the elementary school is the extreme poverty of the children in Harewood. They are the most impovershed children in B.C. and the third worst in Canada.
There will allways be soup kitchens and they have to go somewhere. It would be a bit premature to think its no good for such soup kitchens to be in an area because of what might happen. Its the positives of relocation that a person should look at not the possible negatives.
According to Thursday's daily news the school is not for sale in Harewood, for the 7-10 club I guess they will be my neighbours for a while longer unless someone out there knows of anything else in the works for their relocation.
I wonder why the school is not for sale. Not for lease or rent either? what a huge waste!!

I heard a rumour a year or so ago that the army wanted that school but nothing became of it.
The ignorance of those that always see a negative side to things in life. The 7-10 Club is a positive humane activity, much needed in our society. Those that are so ignorant and selfish in thought, need to really open there eyes to what life is really all about. When you get there you will see why the light bulb was invented. As for proper management,, yes, that is all it takes, and this worthwhile operation can function easily in any neigborhood without the worries of those that have such closed minds. !!!!!
Oh,,, as others have said,,, try doing the volunteer work and really get a hands on experience before you make your judgement.
People have to eat and it is as simple as that. One hell of a harrah for those volunteers that give their time unselfiously by putting in many many hours of work so the hungry can eat.

Come on,, that is not the real reason!! That was just a easy way out to convince people as to why they did not want them. Now the Church has gained the attention of all the people and have implanted a negative thought. So sad!!
When the Church turned this sort of humane society out on the street, I lost total faith in what this Church stood for.

Is this what people think about people who are trying to find a place to eat?
For 6 months I lived a few doors down from the 7-10 club and experienced no problem really. There was some noise issues at the beginning, but nothing outrageous. My car parked on the street was not broken into, vandalized, etc, where as in other areas of Nanaimo I've been repeatedly ripped off.
The neighbours around the area also got more involved in their community as they were worried about the club. This lead to more community cooperation and sense of neighbourhood.
I mean really...it has to go somewhere! Poverty is not going away.
We are on the same page Blue, As I was watching that video I saw a concern about the kids but in reality the people who frequent the 7-10 club also were kids once and the kids of today will be the next group looking for a place like the 7-10 to eat
The 7-10 Club is a POSITIVE aspect to our society that is a need unfortunately. Feeding negative thoughts and blame where they are not truely judgified is true ignorance. Those with negative thoughts need to get involved as this is part of your community and see what this is truly all about. People trying to help those in most need especially the next generation of kids that need a chance in life. Life hands us lemons from time to time but remember some get more lemons than others through no fault of their own. To associate that feeding the hungry enhances the drug world is somewhat a lame idea of thinking.
When the church decided to let go of its support in this field, I lost somewhat some faith in what their true purpose in society is other than preaching the goodwill of god.!!!

I agree all music, Feeding the hungry is an extremely historical and necassary task in any society. Those with christian values should show this as a priority, and those who are merely human too must take care of those who cant for whatever reason feed themselves. Even the condemned on death row are fed.

Good to see the hard work of many citizens to bring this to fruition. The club operates to help those in need, mainly in the downtown area. This new fixed address and plans for a new industrial kitchen will be a huge bonus for those involved. Glad to hear residents in the neighbourhood haven't seen any problems lately, and some were not aware it was in their backyard.
Nanaimo appreciates the work community activists such as Gordon Fuller does on a continual basis. CONGRATS!

yowzers!....I live in the south-end by the rez and food bank, I would surely welcome the soup kitchen here too....our commnunity is active with all sorts of walks of life.....the crackers and junkies do not give me any problems what-so-ever, it is the lawdawgs that make a big deal out of everything street related.....what in the heck are those bloody sirens always wailing for anyways....it suggest to me that they want so much attention as if they really give a dam.....bring on the soup kitchen, cause' it don't bother me where it is as long as I have the opportunity to use their fine service......Stan the man ( Fry Str. area)

I know the south end of Nanaimo very well. And It's not the horror show people make it out to be. I have lived there. And I regret not buying a home there when property values were cheap. Smokey and I were yammering about Gillespie Street a few weeks ago. There is a real feeling of community and friendship there. And people are fixing up their homes. I'd sooner live south of Nanaimo, than north. I've been to both areas many times. And the homes they have built in Hammond Bay are, a lot of them, junk. And leaking junk, priced at $400K and up. South end homes, many of them, are built quite solid, with old-growth rough-cut Douglas fir timbers and Douglas fir ship lap as sheathing fastened on a 45 degree angle. You won't see that kind of building construction again.
I have not walked the streets of the south end for a long while now. But I wouldn't be afraid to do so. I think living in the south end of Nanaimo and in Chase River is one of Nanaimo's best kept secrets. So perhaps we should keep it that way and put out lots of negative stories about how awful the the south end is - so the NIMBY type north end folk stay away :D ;)

i had a house on Kennedy Street for many years. It was built in 1912. i loved that house sooo much. Unfortunately some yahoos one Christmas lit my porch on fire and I lost everything. The contractor who did the restore work just boarded up all the burned wood and Icouldnt even sell it!
i also lived on the corner of Albert and Prideaux Street. Another beautiful old house.i had a big dog when I lived in those areas and nobody bothered me except , bylaws , police and the Port Authority.
Good people are good people no matter where you live.

ya' TH2008....you got that right...I only wish that the BC gov't would stop advertising that we do live in the best place on earth.....seems when you tell everybody stuff like that, all they want to do is come and rape the land (clear-cut, burn and then pave it all) instead of perserving it....this is a great discussion subject on this forum for sure......cheers!......stan the man
