Everyone is invited to this free public event!

Please share!

Vancouver Island University
Building 200 Room 203
Sunday, June 3, 3 p.m.
Parking --Turn right on Opgard Drive

Screening of the award-winning, Canadian-made documentary, "Black Wave: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez" followed by a discussion with Sierra Club BC's, Caitlyn Vernon, who will speak about the Enbridge Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan pipelines and supertanker traffic.

The proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and Kinder Morgan pipeline and tanker traffic expansion pose a serious threat to Vancouver Island's beaches and waters as well as B.C.'s Great Bear Rainforest, home of the Kermode "Spirit" bear. This rainforest represents 25 per cent of the earth’s remaining ancient coastal temperate rainforests. An oil spill in B.C. waters would change our coast forever and alter B.C.'s economy and lifestyle.

"Black Wave: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez" examines the aftermath of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill in Alaska. Over two decades later, the oil is still there, lingering just below the surface. People and wildlife are suffering from life-threatening illnesses and the fishing industry has still not recovered.

This is also the kick-off event forming a local Sierra Club BC group in Nanaimo. Whether you are interested in joining a group or not, come and learn how an oil spill on our coast would impact you and your family.

Refreshments and discussion to follow.

There are several shots of Nanaimo in the collection. I just finished scanned the first one, it's available here: http://vintageairphotos.com/55-7/
I've been trying to post a new photo every few days. Be sure to actually click on the images, you'll be able to zoom way in and see a lot more detail.

Over in my intro on the business forum, it was suggested I post some shots of Nanaimo I've taken, so here's a recent one I took which made the front page of the Daily News. I'm a director of the Nanaimo Astronomy Society and we are looking at having Westwood Lake a designated International Dark site, as it's great location for viewing the night sky.

Anyway here you go, Jupiter is the Lower planet.

Oh and btw in just under a month you will be able to see an event you will never see again. Venus will be passing in front of the Sun on the 5th June. It will take about 6 hrs and start at 3.15pm.

The Nanaimo Astronomy society has loads of free Sun-safe glasses that you can use to view through. Contact the club direct if you'd like to use some safe-glasses to view this once in a lifetime event.

Cheers,

Does anyone know of a good doctor who is accepting patients in the Nanaimo area. My mom is elderly with non-hodgkins lymphoma, just moved up to the area and needs a regular physician. Any advice is welcome... Thank you.

For any other outdoor-enthusiasts out there who own a GPS, why not put all those tracks you've recorded of local trails to use! I've been mapping out trails in Nanaimo for about a year now, and find it pretty cool to be able to collaborate all the road, trail, and other data on one map. So far parts of Linley Valley, Planta, Neck Point, upper Glen Oaks, and Westwood have been mapped out by myself, and I encourage you to do the same.

Anyway, this is the site: http://www.openstreetmap.org/, give it a try if you have some GPS Traces saved from a recent hike or trip. If you want, let us know here on the forums what you did.
Happy Mapping!
