Mermaid's Mug
So Happy to be part of Nanaimo's old city quarter!! We opened on Dec 2 2006, and are now on 'Day 20!' It took a record 20 days to create the underwater mermaid's lair themed coffee lounge including a sunken pirate shipwreck
We have had incredible feedback from every single person who has ventured inside. " It reminds me of a high end night club scene in SOHO", "Totally relaxing comfortable hip atmosphere", "Are you taking applications for regulars?", "I would love to work here!", "Funky Kewl!" Makes us proud I tell ya what!
We are open Mon- Fri 7am - 9pm and weekends 9 - 9pm!!! Yep, Nanaimo has a Specialty Coffee Lounge!! Featuring Tasty light lunches, Sweet Tempations, and an extrodinary specialty coffee menu.
Wed & Sat nights 'Jam & Slam Night' bring yer acoustic instrument and come play with us (jazz, blues, folk & original stuff) or if you are feelin' so inclined the spoken work of the poetry slam.
Sunday Movie Night 6:30PM INCLUDING FREE POPCORN!! We do take requests for future movie selections.
Oh, and the coffee~ all certified Organic, Shade Grown and Direct Fair Trade!!! And the most superb taste. Yes we also sell whole bean coffee to take home (grind here if you need!)
Not a lot of the traditional advertising, as there is not alot of the 'traditional money, yet' But the postive word of mouth is fantastic, and the welcoming from our now regulars, and neighbours - phenomenal, thank you so much.
We have a staff of 6 including your truly, 'the head mermaid'. This may grow as the better weather sets in, and more people find us. We are infact at 357 Wesley Street, across from 'Delicados', and under the 'Your's & Mine Boutique'.
In answer to a previous question on a different thread, there was a 'film school' here previously.
We are totally open to local artists looking to display, show & sell their art, and as mentioned above local musicians looking for a jam/showcase venue.
We do have a growing number of groups that meet here, and are always open to new groups wanting a change of scenery
Thank you again for such a warm welcome to the neighbourhood,
Michelle aka "Gypsy Mermaid"

Oh, yeah to reply to another quandry - Yes I am that giggly girl with the Artcar 'Gypsy Caravan' that ran the coffee truck at Maffeo Sutton park the last 2 years, and yes I do live in that funky art house on Kennedy, with other artcars out front!
-
Sounds like a cool little spot you've got going - I'll no doubt be in to check it out! Tell me you have a cool fish tank to go with your theme?
See ya 'round!
-
I love your cars/house lol
i catch myself in awe every time I drive by

I thought about doing a huge fishtank at first, but the maintence alone would be a bit much, so it didn't happen. But there is a very kewl vibe of being underwater once inside! We are going to have a patio out front as soon as the springtime/summer weather comes, and a 'sea cret' garden out back, with lots of whimsical bits and pieces!!
-
Definitely a place that the wife and I will have to check out.
We are total Anti-Starbucks crusaders.
Nanaimo needs more places like this.
Hope to see it real soon!
Merry Christmas!

It's definitely easy to have a conversation in your funky place. Very spacious, and a cheeky ambience!
Also, I loved my spaghetti omelette, thanks! And Nick liked his panino, too. Yes, "panino" is the singular. Yes, that was me - the guy who pointed that out when I was in. And the misspelled business upstairs. How annoying. (Me, that is.)
-
The Panino was definitely good. I've had two so far.
I think Portia and I may stop by on a Jam night... We do the acoustic thing. *points to signature*
EDIT: Gerry, did you know a consumer of Panini is called a paninaro?
Man this Panini trivia is great.

I've walked by the place but have yet stopped in. However, I assure you that since I only live about 5 minutes walk away from you, I will be stopping by and quite frequently.
I am an avid coffee drinker and I frequent Bocca very very often. Hope to see you guys soon.
