You don't have to pay. You just have to find another way to the other side of the gate and aquire a much more descreet campsite.
If you try to fail, and you succeed, which have you done?.

    Ah, I see.
I've never been up there, for some reason. All of my camping on the Island has been either at the River, or on THIS side of Benson, or far from Nanaimo.

I'd love to hear what the Nanaimo Lakes are like.
And does anybody know why in the Backroads Mapbook there is a red star with "Limestone Formation"?
Oh my god, I want to see what that is...AND there's also a "natural bridge". Or am I remembering that from a different region? (Widgeon, near Port Coquitlam).

Why would that not count? Comox lake is Way out there. I bet you camped at the ever popular "Sandbar". A pretty good spot, but I only have one issue with it. you're kinda trapped there with the heli-logging and all the hiking is practically straight up.

The only camping I've done in Nanaimo are at campgrounds (I'm dating someone who never camped before meeting me and I'm trying to break him slowly into "real" camping"). This month I'm upping it and taking him to Newcastle.

Most of my camping has been in around the North Island taking the kayaks to a little island (usually Cow Island) and spending a few days there.

One campground I really do love and go back at least once a year is Pachena Bay just outside of Bamfield. Yes, I know it's not Nanaimo but I've only been here a short time so haven't yet discovered great hide-aways to camp at in Nanaimo.

    Hi Raen, welcome!
Pachena Bay - I've never been there yet, but I've been to Keeha (just west of Pachena), and if Pachena's anything like Keeha....

Good thing your boy has someone like you to show him how to live! "Never camped before", tsk tsk.

Cow Island eh? Feel like posting a picture of it? I'm sure you have at least one pic for our Gulf Island photos thread!

(So, know of any cheap second-hand kayaks?)

Went camping at Nitinat lake just last weekend, and I gotta say, pretty sweet place. Especially if you're a windsurfer. The campsites are right on the beach and they were free. there was a beat up sign there that said it was $10.00 a night per party, but no one came by to collect money the whole weekend.
We strapped a canoe to the roof of my car and drove for hours on end down the dirt roads. What a blast!!!! I can't believe my car made the journey with no injury. Wish I knew what the fishing was like, but I forgot my rod....

Riverrat: Yeah, Pachena's great. It's a campground but one that is so laid back and it's mostly backpackers that camp there (the trailhead for WCT is at the Pachena Bay Campground). Plus we started going there when my daughter was little after a few bear scares from camping out in the bush with her. And I hike so I usually do a day hike on the WCT when I'm there or go up to the lighthouse for an amazing ocean view.
I don't own a camera (long story involving Mexico, Customs and Chihuahuas) so sadly there are no pics of Cattle Island (yes, I know I messed up and called it Cow Island. Cow/Cattle... same thing). The only pics I have of are in the JOhnstone Strait from a kayaking trip I did.
As for second hand kayaks: try Alberni Outpost in September/early October for the used rentals he sells off.

At Nanaimo Lakes, are you limited to just the Campsites made available by TimberWest or can you go up some of the Forest Service Roads, and camp out at some of the plateaus...?

There's a huge backcountry - while the official line probably limits you to the designated camping areas, I'm sure there are a million other options - just be careful with your fire, and pack out what you bring in, and nobody can complain.
