ALAN BROWN and LES VARRO nominated for 2011 selection in the BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME.
Of 22 nomination, it would be nice to have one with a Nanaimo connection for September 2011 which will be the 40th anniversary of the Nanaimo Boxing club.

Well it appears that the NANAIMO BOXING CLUB will be selected, but the official announcement will not be made until the final decision and approval. Although the club did not begin until 1971, there are several critical points going back to 1967 that when connected into a critical path, they would lead to the open door of the Nanaimo Boxing Club in 1971. Today, in 2012 the club is still operating in Nanaimo but the roots go deep.
In a recent story in the Nanaimo newspaper, it indicated that BARRY CRESWELL "owned" the boxing club. He is the boxing coach, but any club belongs to the members and is a part of all past members,

EX-NANAIMO BOXER MICKEY GRIFFIN is one of the early nominees for
2013 British Columbia Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame. However, it will be
about ten months or so before anyone is selected.
If anyone remember Mickey during his boxing days, any memories of him
would be a nice touch to his boxing journey.

Ii was a great month for Nanaimo boxing history when George Nepper, the founder and head of the old Newcastle Boxing Club and of great asistance when we started the
Nanaimo Boxing club was one of the builders selected. But, also JACK SNAITH was selected in the boxing category and MICKEY GRIFFIN in the junior/youth boxer area.
This is of importance to the memory of the late George Nepper, who had often been
overlooked when folks talked about Nanaimo boxing. But, anyone who was there in the
Sixties and/or early Seventies would be aware of and understand his role in the Nanaimo Boxing club and the sport on Vancouver Island. Recently, one of our boxing stars from the Sixties by the name of MIKE LAZARE, did a tribute to George Nepper and recalled the
day he saw the Newcastle Hotel burning down, and it triggered all sorts of members of boxing in the hotel basement and the role George Nepper played in the success of his own boxing journey and the sport in general.

I belief some stuff concerning bingo was reported in various newspapers, but I did no think about it at the time.
Also, some of the stuff about the early days of the club as reported in 1979 were incorrect, but that reporter
should have done his homework instead of just writing down what somebody tells them.

In the month of May, the Boxing BC provincial championships will be taking place on Vancouver Island
and it is hoped there will be some alumni and active members of the Newcastle and Nanaimo boxing clubs in attendance.
