    Default Moving to Nanaimo

    Hello;

My husband and i are looking forward to moving to the island in about 6 months, specifically to Nanaimo. When i go on craigslist to look for work, there is really...well, nothing. Is it hard to find work in Nanaimo? I am a graphic designer with experience at newspapers and ad agencies. Are home businesses a good idea? My husband is also going to be looking for bindery work in a printshop environment, anyone know of any good ones in nanaimo or within commuting distance? Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks!

nanaimo.craigslist.org is pretty new to Nanaimo, maybe a month old?

Try the jobbank online, that's where I found my job in advertising.... or the local papers have classifieds online as well.

There are quite a number of small print shops your husband could apply to here, maybe just do a search online for 'nanaimo printshop' and start cold-calling them!

Good luck to both of you!... and a pre-emptive WELCOME to Nanaimo!

Thanks Fitz! Sometimes google isnt that friendly...it would appear there are few print shops in Nanaimo. In your opinion, what areas of town are worth completely avoiding as far as buying or renting a home? The arts district downtown looks interesting, would that neighbourhood be bad or good? I obviously dont know nanaimo very well, only drove through it on my way to and from the ferry!

    Artgirl,

You may want to try contacting the Nanaimo News Bulletin just to get started. They sometimes hire people for promotional work in advertising layout. They also publish the real estate magazines (homes for sale)

Contact Publisher Maurice Donn (250)753-3707 or publisher@nanaimobulletin.com

As far as bindery work in Nanaimo, your husband may want to try contacting:

    Kwik Copy
    Brad & Christine McAuley
    256 Wallace Street, Suite #2
    Nanaimo, British Columbia
    V9R 5B3

    T: 250.754.7496
    F: 250.754.8164
    sales@nanaimo.kwikkopy.ca

Not sure if these people do bindery work, but they are a well respected print shop in Nanaimo:

    Quadra Printers
    2217 Wilgress Road
    Nanaimo, BC
    V9S 4N3
    (250) 758-1511
    (250) 758-2311 fax
    info@quadraprinters.com

    Hope this helps!

    Dunno if this helps anyone:
    Senini Graphics

And for what it's worth right now (not all that much, as this forum is still relatively young), you might post in our Nanaimo employment forum.

I do business with them - they're a fantastic shop! Friendly, reasonable, and will go to great lengths for their customers!

I never knew Print3 had a website. Good to know.

I have always found them great. John is super helpful no matter what you are doing.

and fully recommend Senini Graphics. Brian is also great.

There is also that place beside the newspaper across from Country Club golf course... the name escapes me. Maybe more of a decal and sign shop though.

I have always wondered what I-mean (maybe eye-mean) graphics was like and what they do. maybe someone else knows?

This person is definitely right, the Nanaimo Craigslist page is very new and not a good gauge on what's available in Nanaimo as far as employment goes.
Here's the Nanaimo section of the Government Job Bank:
    http://jb-ge.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/JobResu...ent&Student=No

I would also check out Monster.ca as well.
    Good luck to you both!
