Default Vancouver Island Sports - Nanaimo Connections

Nanaimo's contribution to Vancouver Island sports is most interesting.

Throughout the decades, Lacrosse has been an important activity with
interesting competitions with Victoria and mainland teams.

Although the sport of boxing has been a hit and miss pastime in
Nanaimo. Some can still recall the 1959 Vancouver Island
Golden Gloves in Nanaimo in 1959 in 1954 the event was held in Victoria.
Competition came from such places as the Royal Canadian Navy, Port Alberni, Chemainous and other location. One Chemainus competitor
was Skimp Williams (the Williams name is also well known in Logging Sports). In the mid-Sixties, Williams helped with coaching duties at
Nanaimo's Newcatle Boxing Club including cornering duties at the 1964
    Vancouver Island Championships.

NANAIMO's BILL WINDECKER part of winning team.

On October 29, 2011 at the Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence in Greater Victoria
at the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner.
One of the inductees was the london Boxing Club Soccer Team of 1974/75.
Some of the high profile names of team members were BOB BOLITHO and GEORGE PAKOS.
However, one of the team members was Nanaimo's own BILL WINDECKER.
The sponsor for the teams induction was Nanaimo's own Brian Zelley.
