Laws were broken in those days, just as they are today. My adoptive great-grandfather, the last of the big-time smugglers in a long line of them in that family, was the skipper of a China clipper which sailed regularly from China to San Francisco. And he had Chinese women aboard. When they were nearing San Francisco, the women went into hidden compartments below the decks and waited until the ship had been cleared by customs and immigration. (It wouldn't surprise me if some bribery took place, too.) Then at night the women would be taken ashore. If it happened in the US, it probably happened in Canada, too. Many of them were intended to be the young brides of elderly Chinese gentlemen who had worked all their lives at back-breaking jobs and were finally able to afford a wife.

As I understand it, most of the imported workers were young men whose families scrimped, saved, and pooled all their money together to get one family member, at least, to the "Golden Mountain." They were expected to send every available cent back to the family in China, and then to return later. Many of them never had enough money to return to China themselves and died here lonely, alone, without their families, and never to return to China. Tragic lives.

There used to be occasions here at the old Chinese cemetery where bones were disinterred after Mother Nature had done her work, cleaned, and shipped back to China. The only occasion when I took part in one of these ceremonies was when a teaching colleague who had brought her elderly mother to Canada from China invited me to her house because her mother's bones were to be shipped back to China. That would have been in the late seventies or early eighties. It was a huge celebration and the food was so magnificent that I actually took pictures of it.

Opium was another big money maker in my father's family. That, of course, was legal. Go figure.

Wicca is ancient and certainly still practised worldwide. I have friends in Washington who are practising Wiccans and there's certainly nothing frightening or dangerous about them. That's why, in a previous post, I questioned the spelling of the word "cauDLron" in the URL for a local group. A cauLDron is central to the practice. Witchcraft grew out of a combination of the two, I suspect. A whole bunch of amateurs practise what they call "witchcraft" when they really don't know much about it.

It sounds like this teen is into a form of satanism, which is truly scarey. There is a very distinct difference between witchcraft and satanism. I can hear my mother saying "You may summon something which you can't control," a standard saying from her when warning me. However, I hardly think that satan would pick as unworthy a candidate as this one. The worst that will happen to her is that she will cause those around her a lot of unhappiness and may poison herself and others with some of those questionable herbs.
I think you have the situation scoped out accurately. This situation is creepy, which craft I know nothing about but bits and pieces.
I am also concerned about the girls health. She is obese and will eat anything she can get her hands on. I hope this friend goes by the way shortly. I think she is creepy as adverses scary and I see sign of a worn out welcome already.

Sounds to me like a kid with a lot of psychological problems. Probably not a good person to have in your kids' lives. If she ever becomes involved with real satanists, she'd be placing her life in danger. "Biting off more than you can chew."

It would be nice to keep everyone about and be inclusive and accepting but I am in no way qualified to help this girl so I'm afraid I am discouraging the relationship. It is not bringing out the best in anyone including me. And as you say there is real danger there.

As for the church they may be telling you of the one located off Jinglepot. It is in a yard of a home and it has been rumoured to satan worshipers for some years even though that has never been proven.

I have also heard of a cabin up the trail from Witchcraft lake but then I have heard of a cabin nothing to do with a church.

Hey Creepy250, you may be interested in the Butter Church in Duncan - fitz took a couple of photos - you can see how creepy it is.

awesome, ya it looks pretty creepy. i read further up in the forum too that the mountain its at the base of is haunted so thats an awesome place to check out. anyone know of any other creepy places out in the boondocks that would be a fun adventure late on a misty night? also i was just curious, when i was growing up i lived on nova st in harewood and used to see creepy things all the time in the area. Once me and a friend saw a black figure flying across the yard behind my house, and several times in the house i was living in we heard weird noises, had dreams of spirits taking our souls and on several occasions had feelings of being watched. I was just wondering if anyone knows the history of this area?

the vistors cabin in nanaimo is definatly haunted. Relatives of mine have worked late nights in the visitors cabin and have had experiences with a young boy with a red ball.
apparently he had been very ill a long time ago and died at the cabin when it was some sort of day care?
