From Eric Ricker's letter in the Bulletin, referring to the Korpan years:
Thus we got rezoning decisions to suit developers rather than to honour both neighbourhood opinion and established zoning laws and we got full speed ahead on the hotel-less conference centre (but only with Victoria’s helping hand on two separate occasions) despite a highly contentious referendum, an admitted 40 per cent cost overrun and a project that varies significantly from the one promised during the referendum campaign.
That's a nice summary of what rankled so many people about the conference centre development: not that they didn't think a conference centre was viable, but that the process stank of rot and that the degree of spending seemed unnecessary.
