My apologies TH2008 if my "such a state" comment was offensive. I certainly didn't mean for it to be. It just seems there is so much potential for the area to be exquisite, grand, a landmark that tourists could walk around in, a walking history tour. That kind of thing.

Hah? No, it was not offensive at all.

And yes, there is a hell of a lot of potential there, as you stated. It's a great neighbourhood and a great area. And homes there are still more or less reasonably priced. I enjoy that area far more than I do the Hammond Bay area - no offense to Hammond Bay'ers!

I don't think I have ever really checked out that area, but I think I will in the near future.

Default Not quite Nob hill, but...

    It's pretty close..

Anybody read the Daily News article this morning, re hizzoner Mr. Korpan's diatribe against the already done purchase of the old Caprice theatre site? I usually think the mayor's doing an alright job, but I think he was waay out of whack on this issue.....It's in an area that could use a little cash infusion, has lots of potential as it's close to the new Convention Centre, and fufills a need for a moderate sized performing arts venue for small amateur based repotoires. Personally I find the Port theatre a little bit misguided - too big for small theatre, too small for big name performances, something a new multiplex could fufill (hoping!)

And the price at 450k seems pretty reasonable, especially if I read correctly that it would include the cost of renovations for theatre use...

But then again, maybe the mayor's right and I'm wrong...any opinions?

    Cheers,
    Al

Wow, if it included the renovations, I'd say that's a pretty good deal. The firehall next door, although given, it's a cooler building, was up for sale for 1mil if that gives any indication of value.

**edit** you tricked me Al! - I thought this *was* that thread too! haha..

Default Nob Hill's reputation is ill founded...

I live in Nob Hill, and I absolutely love it. The reputation of this area is completely mis-guided and out dated. I think its perpetuated by people that never come here out of fear. Most of the people that talk negatively about the area, have lived in Nanaimo a long time, and never come here. When I introduce people to Nob Hill that are moving here from large urban areas like Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, & Victoria, the potential of the area screams at them, as they have seen first hand the ever growing demand for character neighbourhoods situated with convenient access to urban amenities.

I live in a nice old home that we have carefully restored, and I can honestly say that I would not live anywhere else in this city. We can walk to get groceries, walk to the coffee shops, restaurants and pubs, and the community members are some of the nicest people you will meet anywhere.

There are more families and babies walking around this area, including Nob Hill Park, than derelicts. And the beauty of this area, is beacause of its ill informed reputation, a young family starting out can still afford a nice home, in a nice community, which I think is great!

As a real estate agent in downtown Nanaimo, I am continually talking to people that believe in the Nob Hill area. And I believe it is the best community in town, for people that want to be able to live without a dependence on the automobile, and enjoy a true sense of community.

I'd be happy to show anyone around, should they be interested. There are some great homes available in the area.

I think you're right John, yes it does have more nefarious activity than many other neighbourhoods in Nanaimo, but then Nanaimo is a really safe and quiet town when you compare it to most places in the world, even in the rich countries. Those who I hear use the term "scarewood" (in place of harewood) are always people who have little if any experience as to what lays beyond the island.

I feel the same way when I hear people complain about the cold in January when it hits like 2 degrees celcius, (I've seen minus thirty plus major wind when I was in Nova Scotia) and in the summer when it hits 30 celcius with a dry heat people complain. This is NICE heat, try some east Asian summers out! Those are nasty sweaty.

I've spent lots of time out there and came back to settle here for a reason, actually many. I kind of get frustrated when people don't realize how good they have it.

    Hello
I am relocating to Nanaimo to attend Malaspina college in Sept 2009. I am looking for housing. Preferrably a house (I have twins 15 yrs.) and one cat. Can you tell me what areas I should avoid in the city, if any. The area of Nob Hill sounds interesting. Is there an area within Nob Hill that I should avoid? Also, what would be the closest high school? Thanks

    Hi Krose,
I don't think you should move to Nob Hill with your 15 year old daughters. It is a beautiful, fairly hip location, but it has a vein of corruption that is just too risky in my opinion. I think teenagers are so impressionable and resistant to their dad's opinions that it could really backfire. I know others may disagree and think I'm being a little too overprotective, but compare this post to my other glowing reviews of the area - I think where teenagers are concerned, you could pick a better area.
