The so-called ?Alberta Advantage? turned into a nightmare for a host of retired investors who claim they lost some or all of their life savings to a mortgage investment scheme based in Calgary.
Lenard Sali, a senior lawyer representing many of those involved, said there could be $25 million involved in the litigation that so far covers investors here and throughout Western Canada.
One of the retired couples suing, Ludwig and Amalie Hein of Westbank, B.C., claim they invested more than $230,000 in four mortgage syndications put together by Calgary-based Investors Acceptance Corporation and Investors Brokerage Corporation.
In addition to those named company defendants, Glenn Brower, the alleged sole shareholder of both companies, is also listed.
The Calgary law firm of Burstall Ward and one of its partners, lawyer Scott Sangster are also named as defendants. The statements of claim allege Sangster sat as a director of Investors Acceptance Corporation.
The Hein statement of claim alleges the mortgage syndicators ran ads enticing investors who were ?tired of having global issues negatively affect (their) investments.?
Investors Acceptance Corporation promised returns of 11 per cent and allegedly claimed in one ad that it had more than $40 million in managed funds from more than 500 investors.
The ad also allegedly ended with this line: ?Use the ?Alberta Advantage? to your advantage!!?
No statements of defence or counterclaim were on the court file as of late last week.
