Default moving to Nanaimo - cost using mover

My family is to move to Nanaimo from the midwest. We start to sell things and have garage sales. But still lots to go with us. We think of using a mover (van lines). My gues is it must be much more expensive to get things to the island, than just to Vancouver, as crossing the strait by ferry.

Anybody has the experience using mover?

    Thanks.

Why don't you call a few moving companies and get some quotes? I think they charge by distance and the ferry won't make a big difference. You'll need to book well ahead as they combine a lot of loads to fill the truck.

I've never used a mover myself, but my understanding from talking to my clients is that it is quite expensive. I would contact a few moving companies and get quotes. Also I would talk to some companies like budget and u-haul to see what they would charge to rent you the vehicle and drive the stuff over yourself.

When I moved back to Canada from Japan, as well as when I went from here to university in Nova Scotia, I used a freight service to send some of my largest things. I found that to be the best deal for moving very large things. Still not cheap though.

I do think though that that pieces of furniture, unless you are very attached to them, are something you should consider selling and then buying replacements for after you get here.

There is not much extra charge in moving from Winnipeg to Vancouver versus moving from Winnipeg to Nanaimo. It is only a 3 hour trip plus ferry costs further.

we moved last fall from Calgary to Nanaimo, average 1600 sq ft home with all the kids junk to go with and it cost us roughly $10,000.00 including 2 weeks of storage for overlap between possession dates. That was using a big moving truck company and all we had to do was pack the stuff... it's a whole bunch more to have them pack for you.

For the g/f's stuff,it ran about 4500.00.That was for the contents of your average 1000 square foot house and about two months storage. She packed and unpacked the stuff herself to save some bucks.Get a few quotes, they can vary quite a bit.One way rental from U Haul ranges from 800 to 2000.00 plus fuel, food, ferry, toll etc++++ and you have to load and unload yourself, based on that the moving companies seem reasonable.
