It's rather surprising that Tourism Nanaimo doesn't post this information on their website. Local businesses should be forewarned when to expect a sudden influx of tourists.

A bit off or on topic, however how you want to look at it. But I just read in the Nanaimo Daily News paper that the BC Liberal Government is going to give the city of Nanaimo 5 million dollars to help build a dock beside the gabriola ferry terminal, so these big cruise ships can now touch land, rather than dropping anchor just off of Protection Island.

I guess some will view this as good news. And others may not. But anyway, it's an interesting developement for the Nanaimo harbour.

Nanaimo needs an influx of tourists. They will spend the much needed money the town needs. There will always be those who will complain, but they are usually the same folks who are maddened by the Mom and Pops shops that have to close for lack of business.

Does anyone know exactly where the new berth for the cruise ships is going to be constructed? I found and article on it which I posted on my blog, but it doesn't say where.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that it's going to be in the downtown harbour, but exactly where, I dunno.

I suspect that the new terminal will be built on the Port Authority lands just to the south of the Gabriola ferry docks. I'm hoping that they won't destroy the downtown harbour with it...

According to the press release, the Assembly Wharf is where it is going. A bit futher south then the Gabriola Ferry.

I doubt if we will ever see "SEASPAN" move their docks

The assembly wharf is a good spot for the cruise ship terminal. Already freighter capable, it will require less dredging than most other locations. It is hard to imagine how anyone could think that a terminal could 'destroy' the downtown harbour. It couldnt be any uglier than it is now.

I hope we look hard at making that area an integrated transportation hub for Nanaimo. Move the bus terminal, add a new seaplane terminal that would incorporate the overloaded present site. And leave space for a proper (and inevitable) passenger ferry terminal when it is required.

With proper road access and existing rail (if the E&N ever gets turned around) we could eventually have an incredible facility to center the inevitable growth of Nanaimo's downtown.
