Default Nanaimo Mayor Gary Korpan sues Angela Negrin of Pirate Chips

I cannot believe this. But Nanaimo Mayor Gary Korpan is suing Angela Negrin of Pirate Chips over those stupid "Free Nanaimo from Koruption" bumper stickers. Here is the news article:

Sheesh...maybe someone give the mayor a sense of humor? Where's Frank Ney when you need him? I can almost guess that if this was Frank Ney he would had just laughed it off. I doubt that little ol' "Pirate Chips" on Commercial Street could withstand the financial hardships of a lawsuit. So I suppose we might not be seeing this eatery in business for much longer.

Tony Parkin is also being sued. "Tony Parkin is alleged to have published the stickers and is named in a separate writ of summons..."

Blah..................get a sense of humor, for god sakes.

I know a lot of people, myself included, that think Pirate Chips is a mainstay joint on that corner downtown. It's a unique styled place that visitors talk about when they come back here - First stop, no joking as they get into town.

So I'm rambling a bit... just doesn't seem right. I sure hope they can tell him that it isn't.

Besides, she's being sued for having the sticker *displayed*? Guess they better get busy catching all the rest of the people running them on their cars, vans, bikes.. I've seen quite a few around. It's only fair.

I dunno. I do understand why he is doing it; I can't say I blame him.

I just got a copy of the Nanaimo Daily News dated Thursday, May 1st, 2008 (today). On the front page it reads, "MAYOR SUES OVER STICKER".

Korpan wants his day in court, but I can't help but wonder if this will backfire on him. To me, the issue seems so small and petty and people might look at it this way. Might be cheaper and easier to just go have a beer and forget about it.

I also read in that article:

"Korpan also declined to comment on allegations he made last year that the Friends of Plan Nanaimo group was behind the stickers, saying that more details will come out at pretrial discovery hearings. "Those who have been lying to us will be obliged to answer us," he said..."

Looks like they are out to find anyone else who was involved in the creation of these stickers. There could be a few Nanaimoites who will be having some sleepless nights in the next few months, sadly enough.

And yeah, I have seen these stickers around for a while now. Where I live, one fella has one on the back of his truck on his tailgate.

Be sure that anytime I see one of those stickers, I note the time, place, license number and description of both the vehicle and driver and forward that information to Mr Korpan. It is my hope that any and all of these people displaying the sticker be sued as well.

This is the type of thing that drives people from politics. Nobody likes to have their family name dragged in the mud. This is the same innuendo that plagues the Cable Bay forum.

If you are displaying this sticker, expect to be held accountable. Particularly if the mayor wins this first part of the suit.

The Mayor's name was not even on the bumper sticker. But I suppose during Discovery, if the Plaintiff's attorney can get admissions from the Defendants that the word "Koruption" was a reference to the Mayor, then they could go from there and use those admissions in court as proof of malice.

But personally, I think this issue is small and petty. And people would have forgotten all about it if it was not for these recent developments.

I still say, go have a beer and laugh it off.

I'll be checking the Nanaimo Daily News in the next few days to read what the opinions are regarding this. It should be interesting.

One can really only make statements about others if they have iron clad proof that what they are stating is true... not that I am a Korpan fan but one should look in thier own back yard before commenting on someone elses

There is very little doubt about the meaning of that sticker.

I wonder how you would feel if your family was subjected to that sort of thing?

The only thing I ever agreed with Bill Vander Zalm about was when Glen Clark's house was raided and the media showed a shot, over and over, of Clark's wife looking like a deer in the headlights. Vander Zalm said that was the most disgraceful thing he had ever seen. I agree. We have to get away from the idea that it is ok to say anything about any politician if we dont agree with them.

A very good friend of mine, a prominent lawyer in town, has been approached many times to run for office. His standard answer is 'Why should I put my family through that'.

A good question and one that I am sure that many people have asked themselves in the last few years.
