If Korpan was just "Joe six-pack" in the neighborhood, I could see him doing what he is doing. However, he is a public figure in Government. And it's to be expected that a public figure in Government will get all kinds of public criticism. That will never change. Remember "Lyin' Brian" or "Glenocchio"? They were parodies, but neither those two people sued others because someone created a silly parody and stuck them up on t-shirts and posters, or published those words on the web, or in newspapers. But sadly enough, this Korpan suit will probably make its way through the courts and the ruling will no doubt be in favour of the Plaintiff, unless they settle before that.
I know Korpan has taken a lot of heat in office over the last 10 years. And maybe he got fed up with it and has now decided to make a stand. Who really knows what went on there. Angela Negrin did run for the Mayor's chair a while back. So maybe this is political? Who knows...

Public figures do not get accused of corruption unless someone has proof.
So far, nobody here or out there in the city has provided proof.
And without proof, neither Angela nor Tony have apologized AND THAT IS WHAT THIS ABOUT.
There is a very large difference between 'public criticism' and cowardly unsubstantiated personal allegations. Korpan has taken huge amounts of criticism over the NNC and just took it. Thats part of public life.
Nobody, Joe Six pack or Mayor of Nanaimo should have to take that kind of personal abuse. Criticize him if you dont agree with what he has done. Dont attack him personally and try to take advantage of the perception that 'he is just a public figure'.
Public figures in politics get accused of corruption all the time. It doesn't make it right, but it happens. Strike up a conversation in the pub about political leaders and you'll hear all sorts of allegations, most of it extremely slanderous. Also, in Federal and Provincial legislatures, how many times has we heard allegations of corruption and wrong doings hurled back and forth during question period? Our own political leaders do this on an almost daily basis. And they can do it venomously and with spite and malice. Again, it does not make it right, but it happens a heck of a lot.
So, our own political leaders do this. And the public does this. They don't often make up bumper stickers to voice there outrage, mind you. But as far as that goes, there has been no ruling thus far. You never know, Angela Negrin and the others could come out of this smelling like a rose. But I doubt it.

TH: Is Gary Korpan corrupt?
As far as I know, anytime one member has slandered another member or come close to it, they have been warned by the speaker. Not once have those types of comments been uttered outside of parliament, though. Who has been outright accused of corruption in any legislature in Canada?
