it is a hub of an old wagon wheel. . I've got one just like it (only not so wet and deteriorated)

I'm not so sure about what the metal is though, some sort of control arm, or part of the framework to keep the axle on?

So what's the scoop on this thing? Did you find out what the artifact is?

I'm liking the confidence exhibited in fitz's assurance that it's a wagon wheel. S'weird though - it seems like that would make for an awfully broad wheel - I mean it would be wide. So, when you say it could be a wagon wheel, do you mean like this? (sorry about the crudenesss):

Well those wheels had to be strong, in order to withstand the pressures placed upon them. Can you imagine how rough the terrain was, at the time of the horse and carriage. It wouldn't surprise me at all, of it's size.
I am pretty sure that's what it is. If it is not part of the wheel itself, then it must be the center axel, the gears between the two wheels.

yes, exactly! Nice work on the diagram, crude as it is, it gives a good idea of how it worked. Amazing the amount of hand-made milled and machined bits there were on those old things! Wish I had my hub here, I'd take a picture (I wanted to make a lamp out of it, one of those projects that never happened)

I wanna find some of those cool things...hehehe...Maybe when i finally move back to nanaimo from gabriola, Gerry can take me to some of these neat places in Nanaimo. Honestly, i havent experienced much (if anything at all) of Nanaimo's History, but im deffinately interested in it. Gerry....take me on some adventurous nature/history walks......aslong as we dont walk for more than an hour.....any more than that and my legs start complaining....LOL

Gerry the tour guide. I can see it all so clearly. My sister and her hubbie just started a Vancouver walking tour company.
