Probably wood was common at that time. maybe a pioner was crossing and got a 'flat'.

Can we get more pictures of this from different angles? I'm pretty sure I know which animal this is (hint: it's grey, has a trunk), but I don't want to be wrong about it. That would be embarrassing.
