Thread: Modern Cafe

    Default Modern Cafe

Dined approximately 2 weeks ago at the Modern Cafe. A disappointment. A bit pricey for what is offered. My friend and I shared an appetizer, Greek salad, that had a bed of lettuce, which I believe is not a typical ingredient, and is one I do not need in my salad. It was not a large portion. It also did not have enough feta cheese. The food was bland in flavour, both mine and the food eaten by my friend. When asked by the waitress how was the food, we both replied it was lacking flavour. She brought more sauce, for each of our dishes, and it was an improvement. I feel the food should have been sent from the kitchen already tasting of the correct flavour. The service was adequate. The interior of the restaurant is cozy with an intimate "modern" feel. It does have atmosphere. It would be a great improvement if the food were as special as the decor.

I'll be the positive one and say that the Mediterranean omelette is at least a tasty breakfast offering that they have (and 'real' chunky hashbrowns).. and I love that I can have a beer with that at breakfast time!

I had the burger there last week and I'm pretty sure it was a frozen patty. Not good enough for the price.

My dining companion enjoyed the macaroni and cheese with chorizo, though.

Default The Modern is a good spot downtown!

I think there is always room for improvement in any restaurant, but overall I think the Modern is a great spot. I had the Indian Style Eggs Benedict there the other day (I forget the exact name?) and it was exceptional!

I just had the same thing recently, also forgot the name, but it had some fresh mango chutney on it, I quite enjoyed it.

the peanut butter pie is TASTY!!!!
And the west coast fritata is a great breakfast - nice size, tasty flavor combo (goat fetas, chicken, sun dried tomatoes...mmmm)

That's a few positive breakfast reviews, and I remember having a good breakfast there a couple of years ago.

Are they open for breakfast everyday?

I don't know for sure, but I know they're open Sundays early enough.

Forgot to mention, one of the reasons I love it, I can have a Hoegarden with breakfast. So good on a summer morning!

I always enjoy the Modern, good location and nice staff.
I had the west coast fritata for brunch on Saturday and it was great. Sat outside and watched the activity downtown while enjoying a nice tea with brunch. Great morning.
