The Urban Beet

Hey Everyone,
I went to this new place beside Costco today, called the Urban Beet. I have no idea how long it has been open but it is amazing. I am sad I did not go sooner. It is a coffee house/bistro/grocerie store/bakery/deli. It was great. I had a sandwich called "the French" I think. I made it into a pannini and it had brie, portobello mushrooms, watercress, tomatoes and something else on it. The sandwich also came with a choice of green salad/deli salad or soup. I had the house soup which is a borscht (spelling?). My girlfriend came with me and had the curry chicken. It came with a green salad and something we couldn't figure out what it was. My sandwich and soup was $7.95 and the curry chicken plate was $9.95. The groceries included a lot of organic products like organice pickled carrots and beans. They also had fresh olive bread which looked amazing. I would totally recommend The Urban Beet located next to Costco, in the building where a restaurant has not stayed afloat for long. I hope that The Urban Beet makes it because the staff was friendly and the food and decor was great.

Urban Beet is definitely a decent cafe to sit around and relax while enjoy some well made food they have to offer. The desserts are awesome! My favourite so far has to be the Orange Polenta Tarte thingy.

After reading the thread about Bodhi, I was so close of going there today but the Stilton Cheesecake Bar was just sending waves of temptation that I couldn't deny and so I stopped there again with a buddy. So good!

I drive by Urban Beet almost every day, and it's always busy.
To anyone going to the Urban Beet, I'd like to make a few simple requests:

1. Please signal when turning left into Urban Beet!
2. If you are parking out on Applecross, please look before walking out between parked cars!

I had soup and panini there on sunday. was good. its got a kitsilano west endish feel to it with none of the snobbery. prices are decent by vancouver standards. 10 for soup and panini. don't know about anything else though.

Psst! Don't let the word get out too far about the Beet. I'm a neighbour within easy walking distance and I don't want to ever have to line up for lunch. It's getting to that point. We've lived through a lot of "in and out" occupants of the building, but this one is here to stay!

Hopefully they can find a way to accomadate the parking better for their business. I can just see that *no parking - yellow line* get painted on Applecross Rd. and that would not be a good thing for their business. Yes they are doing a great business!!

There's construction s-l-o-w-l-y taking place right across Applecross from the Beet, after the land was stripped bare and then sat there for about two years. Hard to tell what it's going to be, but it's called "Georgiaview Village." But from the "Phone xxx for Lease Information" I suspect it's going to be commercial. So that may turn out to be a dandy parking lot for people headed across the road for soup and a sandwich. In this economy, I don't think it's going to be filled with businesses (or whatever) for some time. Once they finish paving it, it could be a dandy spot to find parking, although I doubt the city's going to be putting in yellow lines on Applecross.

. . . the last few times I've been by, even at lunch time, there have been no lights and no cars in the parking lot. Surprising. The place seemed to be doing well. Sigh.
