Larry is polite, kind and a joy to be around. I love him dearly but I never want to see him corrupted by politics.I am not a pot smoker. I dont object other than the legal aspects of it.
LArry gets things done in his own way.

It is all the free spending and a multi-plex to. Tax's Will go up. Tonight council voted to consider 5 million to look at water. I just believe in fiscal restraint, I`m cheap. Put that 5 million towards a new dam not a study. You really have to see what council spends money on. Don`t forget you really only have 4 % of the city budget to play with or redirect. The other 96% there is know wiggle room. After that you are in deficit.
Are you insinuating that anyone who has smoked a joint is incompetent?

Thanks Smokey, for reminding us about the other two candidates - I left Korpan and Iwaskow out because this thread is for people who already know they don't want to vote for either of those two, and are split on which of the remaining two they should give their vote to. (I have met both Larry and Gary. Larry, I've met several times and he was always rude to me for some reason - though I know a lot of other people think he's a hoot. I met Gary when he was shopping at a store I was working at - I asked him casually about how a young guy like me would BEGIN to think about achieving a councillor's position some day, and he looked dour and said "You don't want to get into politics. There's no money in it." This quote may not paint a picture of the man I encountered - but he sure wasn't the personality I associate with "mayor" in my idealized City concept.)
Anyway, back to the present conversation: Comments about appearance (I don't see a problem with Diane's) and wardrobe (I don't see a problem with John's) aside, it appears that there is a perception that Diane would support social initiatives, and that we can't afford those. (I tend to think that social programs should come first and money can be found later, but I've been called naive before.) I see she has a background in sociology.
So what about John? Is he the opposite? Will he get the books balanced at the expense of our city's impoverished citizens and its cultural identities? Will he sell us out to alien corporate interests?
I don't actually have any such preconceived notions about either candidate's platform or leanings. I'm just trying to make it easier to discuss this topic, by setting up questions and inviting people to contradict me with facts they know or opinions they believe.

I've emailed both candidates and invited them to join our dialogue.
I won't blame them if they don't get involved - community forums can be so ... messy.
I just realized I've hung out with the sons of both Mr. Ruttan and Mrs. Brennan. I worked with [...] Ruttan and I've "partied" with [...] Brennan - both smart, super nice guys. I know that doesn't necessarily help anyone choose whom to vote for - more of a plug for how "connected" I am in Nanaimo.![]()
