We don't need transit service to Duke Point or the Airport as it would not be viable. The University has gotten the majority of extra transit service over the last 8 years. It is time to increase usage to Cedar and Lantzville and other parts of the City first.
Personally I am against WARD SYSTEMS as they are a step backwards. Each elected representative SHOULD be responsible for the entire city, not just their little area of the community.
Most of her other sentiments are echoed by each and every other person in this election.
Nope, nothing new or exciting there . . . .
maybe YOU should run for council and stop being so negative! I love you
Maybe they could do a system like the School Board where a Board member is assigned a specific area (schools) to liason with and to raise issues for.
Smokey I am surprised that you would advocate for increased bus service to Cedar/Lantzville as neither of those areas have the density to technically warrant the bus service they currently have. Besides, the bus service to those areas is a RDN/Lantzville decision as the service in those areas is paid for by the residents of those areas.
The Regional District of Nanaimo is made up of representatives from Electoral Area 'A', 'B', 'C', 'E', 'F', 'G', 'H', Mayor of Parksville, Mayor of Qualicum, Mayor of Lantzville, Mayor of Nanaimo and 6 members of Nanaimo City Council.
I am sure that Lou Biggemann would love increased transit to his area as would the other Area representatives. the majority of transit is concentrated to Nanaimo, Parksville and Qualicum who with 9 members make up a majority of the RDN Board.
That shows how the WARD system has it's faults. Each Area representative usually ends up supporting items outside their areas to gather support for projects within their areas. I don't see how we can come up with a better representation unless we reduce the number of positions from Nanaimo or increase the numbers of our Areas so that the Mayor and Council members from the 4 communities do not hold the balance of votes.
Remember that each candidate you vote for could also be our representative for the Regional District as well as for the City of Nanaimo.
I favour greater service to both Lantzville and Cedar as they have a bare minimum transit service with limited runs per day.
I just took a look at the angela negrin blog and someone had made a comment about her relatives and their property. I think it is shameful to make such guilt by association and or to use the election process for personal vendetta's. Please lets try to keep it about the candidates and the issues. If a candidate lives with their mother, or is a vegetarian or other irrelevant things, should have no place in the discussion of our city. Remember what happened to negative john and bible spice in the last election in the US. Namaste
The reason why transit is concentrated to those areas is because those are the areas of higher density which is needed to make transit even close to economically viable (still with a provincial subsidy).
The method of taxation for transit is composed of a calculation based on service. If there is no service there is no charge for transit. Lantzville and Cedar have minimum transit service because the population density is not enough. No sense increasing service if it is only going to result in empty buses running in circles.
On a technical basis a majority of Nanaimo doesnt even have enough density to make transit economically feasible.
It is unfortunate that some stoop to the low position of attacking a candidate and their lifestyles, political party association, location of residence and other personal vendettas, but sadly that is rapidly becoming the way to win . . People cannot find reasons to blast a candidates thoughts or reasons on various city related issues so they attack however they can.
