I must say I am not very impressed with the city. We got a good 6-8 inches of snow on Wednesday and as of last night at 10:30pm when I was coming home from work they still had not plowed the highway, or even sanded it! It's packed down from the vehicle traffic but that traffic has also melted a bit of the snow and with our continual sub zero temperatures that packed snow has turned to ice and made for VERY treacherous roads.
I realize this is not the norm and the city doesn't have the equipment or budget to deal with this but the highway seems like a pretty main road to me and I can't believe they haven't at least put some sand down. It's ridiculous!
All traffic southbound headed to town or the Ferry terminal is blocked by Police cars.
So looking forward to the drive to work today...
It's Reopened
Roads are a disaster out there - either people are getting stuck in the 6 or 8 inches of snow piled up in turning lanes, etc. or spinning out on the icy intersections. If you don't need to drive today - don't!!!! Where exactly are the plows, sanding trucks, etc? The fact that not even the parkway or highway are done yet is insane!!!!! I can understand the back streets but the parkway, highway - anywhere around the mall at Christmastime, roads like Mostar, Northfield, Bowen, etc - these should be plowed, sanded and maintained (doing it once last Friday does not cover them for the rest of the snowfall!!!). Okay - that is my former Albertan rant!!!
Have a great day!!!!!

I am told that the CIty have about 100 plows, sandtrucks etc. That equates to 33 vehicles per 8 hr shift assuming that they are plowing 24/7. Not many trucks & not many operators for this 'once in 10 year' snowfall.
The problem seems to be more with those that have little winter driving skills , those that just 'have' to go out for a latte! & those that think that all season tires are good enough for these extreme conditions.
I have said sh*t to it as I don't expect a plow on these south of town roads for at least another two days. Emcon plows our roads & I think they are underfunded by the Province hence our long wait.
It's a little frustrating to think of how much Provincial monies are being spent on winter Olympic sports such as the luge & speed scating ovals! A relative handful of people will use these facilties whilst tens of thousands suffer on the poor roads!
Highways are the sole responsibility of the Provincal Government. Roads are municipal. I think both levels of Government have let us down. They have stripped the budgets for Highways and road maintainence down to almost nothing. While we wait for our loved ones to return from work(school teacher) that should not have been open today, we should be writing and phoning our MLA's.
I wonder how many roads like mine have not even been touched this week. i feel sorry for those who are house bound. i am glad that the power is still on.
I have lots of groceries and can make soup and bake bread so I am not too adversly affected. I can take the time to play my guitar and get some rest for a change.
i hope someone is looking after the homebound seniors and others in neeed.
The malls here in Victoria haven't been as bad as Woodgrove for cars stuck. Ouch! I hope we don't get too much snow between now and when I go up to Nanaimo next. I'd prefer no snow and I am probably not alone there.
