    Default Nanaimo-Cultural Capital of Canada

Living our culture celebration, I don't recall seeing anything in the local newspapers about any of the 4 legacy events that were held in 2008 to celebrate Nanaimo as the culture capital. $750,000 was given to Nanaimo parks recreation and culture for these events from the federal government.
The last event is to be held January 31st 2009 @ beban park social centre at a cost of $35 per person and enjoy the sounds of Disco funk extravaganza by Nanaimo's own Wunderbread. If you divide that $750,000 between the other 4 events that would be somewhere in the neighbourhood of $187,000 per event. I would like to hear from you, give me your input on what you know about this funding from the federal government. Where did the money go?

If its an event to celebrate the culture of Nanaimo, and encourage people to attend, and there was a $750,000 grant, why in the world is it $35/person to attend??? Sounds fishy to me - I don't recall hearing ANYTHING about this or even seeing any advertising/etc to promote it (or any of the other 3 venues.)

neecy2k Thank you so much I wanted to make sure I was not barking up the wrong tree and you are the first to post on this new thread with the same concerns as I have. $750,000 went somewhere I have done a bit of research and cannot find any trace of the grant being handed over to the city of Nanaimo. Below is a bit of information on the go nanaimo blog which you can read. It is called living our culture celebration

Some of it went to The Sidewalk All Stars I believe. This group was originally part of The Nanaimo Blues Society. They are now two separate entities. Wonder why? check out Sky High Productions.

Perhaps Some went to Crimson Coast Dance Society.none went to help starving musicians that i can see.

Art In The PArk was hurting for money . i asked them why our band wasnt considered this summer. They said they had no budget.
I found that strange as The Grey Notes were sponsored by Nanaimo Information the year before for more than six weeks. We provided our own equipment and a tent was donated by Nanaimo Information as well. They could have had us for no cost.
did Art In The Park not get ny Cultural funding?

how bout THe VIEX? They were hurtig for money too and had to "heaven forbid " hire more local talent.

Does anyone know where the money went?

Any of you folks out there see some great entertainment that was cultural this past year? i am tlking about extra stuff tht we dont normally get.

Why is the banner program not receiving more funding?

Where did the money go? Who gets it? Who decides what is culture?

    More questions with no answers,
Why has parks and rec now added culture to their name?
Why are parks and rec so involved in the music industry in Nanaimo?
Why do parks and rec decide where Federal grant money goes.
Is parks and rec a part of our community who look after things like flowers, swiming pools, ice arena's and so on?
I think it's time for some answers.

i am not trying to point fingers, do you think this is "Public Sponsorship Scandal" of Nanaimo version. Lol, just joking, I don’t wanna someone sue me.

I only know “Nanaimo, culture capital of Canada” thru radio . I think how heritage Canada should be the regulator who is in charge..

Better question - why is Nanaimo the cultural capital of Canada? Who decides this? What are the requirements to be awarded Cultural capital of Canada?

    What is Nanaimo culture?

I did some googling on "Cultural capital of Canada".

I got 26,600 hits, in quotation marks, as well.

Seems different parts of Canada are taking turns at this
