I really hope Tom Harris decides to stay on board. He has been a good voice for the ferries to run more like a business rather than a public entity bleeding money. Tom is a successful businessman, dedicated member of many community and charity associations, and a kind gentleman. His years of experience running many businesses on the island is worth the consultation fee/salary. His presence is more beneficial to the board than many may think, his influence gives Nanaimo a voice to senior levels of government who respect successful local business owners like Tom.
It does sound like they are overpaid, but I'm not sure how much time they put into board. Getting large bonuses right now does sound like bad timing, maybe they could hold off until times are better. But this could cause them to lose well qualified members...tough one!
