I just checked out the Coal Underground Workings Atlas yesterday.

A MUST OWN for anyone exploring the location of the underground workings in the Nanaimo area.

Yes, I would have to agree. I went out today to look for the mine shaft and cabin since it was nice out. The river is raging. I have to get to the other side via the logging roads off Spruston road. That will be another day!

went to the spot today, it's all caved in what your looking at is the top of what used to be the tunnel, it's been a few year since I was there and time has not been kind to the old mine, I remember walking into it and the tracks were running along the ground. we found a few sink holes around the site that we think are other cave ins, also what we think may be a entrance that is filled in. here's some photos, what we think may be a buried entrance .
We got to it from the gate at the end of Spruston it's 1 mile from the gate.

I haven't seen anything like this around here other than the Morden Mine....
I am going to go up there tomorrow to see if I can find it. Any other directions would be helpful.

from the gate take your first right, follow that road all the way down to the river you'll find a trail into the forest, you'll find it and a weird fire pit follow the trail down and you'll walk by what we think is the entrance then you'll find the cabin, someones been living in the cabin theres some weird little jars and stuff, I left every thing there in respect to whoever because I'm pretty sure they'll be back, the cave in is behind the cabin to the right, if you walk back from what I'm calling the entrance straight up the hill you find a number of look like cave ins, and another what appears to be a depression right in front of the cabin, too bad it filled with water and collapsed, I was a bit disapointed since it was in such good shape last time we were there. fun trip though, good luck

Well eveythings getting so old now that I'm suprised there's anything left at all. The logging in Extension revealed a ventilation shaft which was dismantled and the fan is now on display at Morden Mine. I wanted to see it perserved as-is. I mean fill the hole 3/4 full or cage off the opening with bars so the public won't get hurt, but leave it in place like the one on New Castle Island. Aside from a scenario like this you're probably dealing with structural collapse as you saw the other day. You really need to find someone whose actually been there because looking at a map in the atlas could take years for you to dicover anything, Moreover, will anything still be there after the logging is done? I really appreciate your help. It' exiting to see that mine out in the bush like that. I hope there are more like it! Thanks Again!
