Not sure how familiar you are with SPOT, works like a GPS, has to have access to satellites. Underground, I don't know? . Everything I have heard about SPOT, is that it takes a while to locate. You basically activate it and walk away, may take a while. Don't own one, so not sure. Underground.......................?

I have also never used one but it is in expensive. I bet your right about it not working underground. my phone supposedly has a gps but it doesn't work terribly well anywhere. I suppose even if I bought it I couldn't be certain it will help until its too late. Im sure they wouldn't appreciate a test run for emergency responses...how ever :-P

Anybody know what this old steam shovel bucket is all about? It's in the north end, probably vintage 1930's or 1940's, maybe not that old. It is sitting in a field and looks like it's been there for years. Some of you may have passed it in your travels. It would look better at a museum! I took these photos yesterday on my way to Nanoose.

I have seen that bucket sitting there for years. Never got out and looked at it. Not sure why it is there but it would be interesting to have it moved and maybe used for something. I think maybe 5 years ago Leemar up in Errington had an old piece of equipment that had that style bucket parked out near the highway but I think it's gone now.

I remember that old steam shovel sitting by the highway like you mentioned. I'd take the bypass whenever I traveled to Qualicum and I'd see it beside of the southbound highway lanes. There was also one in Extension some time ago, can't quite remember if it was a steam shovel or not. It was buried in the trees and sitting down a ways from Godfrey Road. There was a sharp turn in the road there, at Bramley and Godfrey. At least I think that's where I saw it. It was around 1998.

I was looking at some pictures of steam shovels on the internet and thought I'd post a couple so you can see the bucket design.

The steam shovel was invented by William Otis, who received a patent for his design in 1839. The development of simpler, cheaper diesel-powered shovels caused steam shovels to fall out of use in the 1930s.

Got me lookin for some pics. I was involved in the complete rebuilds of 6 P&H 2100 B and BL 15 cu yard shovels, and the build out of 2 Marion 191M new shovels at Utah mines in Hardy. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.
