Just off the topic of steam shovels for the moment, I have a few pictures from yesterday. I was in Harewood and stopped briefly to look at this steam powered tractor. It looks homemade and fun to drive. I like the sprocket and chain rear wheels. I won't post the exact location but will gladly add the photos to the thread. I'll leave the 'image adjust' up to you folks:P

I will be in Campbell River for work this afternoon and will make a point of driving through Cumberland on my way there. Although I don't have the time to hunt for mines, I will post some photos of their coal car benches when I return home this evening. My visit will be a quick one.

That's cool. Sounds like they're interesting pics.

I made these a while back. I put the 1:24 scale model car on my laptop but the idea was working against me. Anytime I used the camera's flash, the light would reflect off of the stainless steel body and distort the image. I'll figure something else out at another time I guess.

As promised, the pictures were scanned from polaroids taken in 1979. BTW the shovels have 15 cu yard buckets and are electric. Somewheres around 5400 volts.

Thanks, those are great photos to look at. That steam shovel is massive compared to the one belonging to the bucket and arm laying out in that field!

    Default Cumberland Coal Car Benches

I made a quick detour through Cumberland yesterday afternoon to get some pictures of their coal cars and street benches. I wanted to stay longer but didn't have the time. I'll have to go back one day and hike some of the old mining sites. I talked to a couple of guys who told me there were a couple of mines out there I would find 'interesting'. Although my visit was short I did get the photos that I went there for.

Here are a few photos of the benches out in Cumberland, taken yesterday:

    Default Cumberland Coal Car Benches

It looks like GBritt went the distance when he constructed his own benches. I really admire his craftsmanship. Very, very cool idea.

The first photo shows GBritt's finished product. The following four photos show the street benches in Cumberland.

The Cumberland No.6 Coal Mine was just down the street so I went and looked at the coal cars quickly.

Cumberland coal cars. They sure look nice when they're restored!
