    Default Coal Trail

Present day coal trails in the Nanaimo area are few by far. The one pictured below only exists as a foot path. During the 1980's the same trail system was frequented by 4X4 trucks and dirt bikes which I also found myself following on weekends while attending Mount Benson Elementary School. After the Parkway was constructed nature reclaimed the majority of area leaving very little behind.

That is super cool news, and I hope the delegation is successful. C'mon, we're a "cultural capital"!

Yeah, very cool. It would be nice to some restoration work done at the site. She's 100 years young next year!

Default Welsh Miner's Lamp - Lee Valley Tools

You can go ahead and charge this one to your credit card. Tell your wife it was my fault! Trust me, this one is worth every penny.

Damn, I sold one of those exact same lamps at a garage sale for $5.00 a while back. Someone got a good deal. LOL

I'll say. I would have paid $10! No worries, I've let a lot of things go cheap too. Probably could have made more money price-wise but sometimes you just want to sell the stuff and make it go away!

It's surprising what collectors will pay for something that they want. The vintage Davy lanterns are going for about $100 on eBay. The lantern advertised from Lee Valley will cost the same with the taxes and shipping while the "underground version" with the flash-arresting baffling sells for around $250. Who knew?

    Default Windy Hole

Made it back to the island for a few days. Went out into the bush yesterday with a friend whose grandfather operated one of the area mines until the early 1960s and found this windy hole near some coal slack piles. We also visited Garry Britt in Extension who has a nice spot on his lawn for the big coal car he now has all the pieces needed to assemble. It will go well with his other cars. We were shocked to learn that there was some recent damage on a couple of his coal cars where it appears someone was trying to pry off artifacts. Bloody awful that he does such nice fine work to find vandals coming onto his property trying to rip chunks from it. It seems he built these things well enough that the attempts were not successful.
