UPDATE: HIGHLY recommend SUNSHINE for a great job, intelligent problem solving, accurate estimates, no overcharging or pushing crap you don't need.

My house needed someone to fix a roof that a previous owner had installed incorrectly. I called Blake Erickson, Dan Faux - Weapons of Mass Construction, Roofco, Sunshine and The Gutter Man for estimates.I didn't bother with Aspin because of the $150 "call-out" charge.

I found myself scratching my head as to "follow up" with roofing companies:

Erickson was the first to show up, but they seemed kind of disorganized, (at least as of the writing of this, Winter/Spring 2010). A guy showed up, looked around and made some very expensive suggestions (e.g. "you need new gutters and we'll probably need to replace A, B, C), said he'd mail me an estimate, but didn't. When I called the office, they sent a different guy out who didn't seem to realize someone had already been up already! No estimate ever came.

Based on the strong recommendations on this thread, I made an appointment with Dan Faux but he did not show up, and did not return (polite) calls asking if something had come up, and if we needed to reschedule. About a week later, he left a message on my voicemail acting like nothing had happened. I did not follow up.

The Roofco guy came, I liked his style and knowledge, but like Erickson, no estimate ever materialized. I didn't bother following up after Erickson/Faux had just blown me off.

I started to wonder if a roof repair job wasn't enough of a money-maker for them; rather than a whole-new-roof job?

I was so relieved when Sunshine arrived, and the estimate was made ON THE SPOT and emailed to me. I liked Ted right away, appreciated his "let's work with what we've got" attitude. They understood that we weren't made of money, still treated me with a lot of respect and did a phenomenal job.

In a few years when I need a whole new roof, I will go to Sunshine. I also told them I would tell everyone I know in town what a great job they did

(P.S. The Gutter Man was pretty good, too; will probably get him to come back to clean the gutters or do minor repairs if Sunshine is busy.)

Default Repeating advice, and my observations

Somewhere in this thread there is a recommendation that people should obtain a "quotation" and not an "estimate". A quotation should be a firm price, usually valid for 30 days.

I dealt with Aspin, and checked several references before committing to the job. I also had other quotations - all fairly similar. No problems so far.

I hope people who have had complaints will address them to the Vancouver Island Better Business Bureau. It is one method (probably not foolproof) of getting problems corrected. Besides, if a company screws up, the record of the scew-up is public on the BBB website. If there are numerous complaints - avoid - avoid - avoid. If a company chooses not to belong to the BBB I am inclined to question the company's motives.

Oh yes, don't forget that the law requires a 15% holdback of the contact price for 55 days - I think it is part of the construction lien act - there must be a lawyer on here who can be more precise.

I've used ATC home solutions inc on one of my properties and they were fabulous. they took care of the property, they didn't leave a mess...they actually cleaned the yard spotless everyday, and the 20 year workmanship warranty was an awesome bonus! get a certified company if you want a great warranty and guaranteed quality work. they spent over 2 hours explaining every detail of what I was getting and why it was important. amazing customer service.

I called blake erikson, the sales guy didn't seem that interested in showing me what my options were and I later found out that they only put regular felt on the bottom of the roof, instead of the ice/water shield stuff that is supposed to be on there. I checked with the city and that is below minimum code! I don't know what the heck they are doing putting on roofs below minimum code.
