Another view by a noted well known famous poet and the most visible busker. An acquaintance of mine Tim Lander who is working with Pattje and Unger to liberalize the busking by-laws for the benefit of buskers and their fight for cultural appreciation.
It appears that some people don't get it, There will not be any busking bylaw in Nanaimo within 6 months. Our goal is to have it elliminated and we will.(The Cunningham Family)
As a Society our #1 purpose in our constitution is To raise awareness in Canada that street entertainment is a valid and vibrant part of arts and culture in Canada This has not and does not happen in Nanaimo. This is not a one man or a three man show to dictate above our freedom of speech or expression. We The Cunningham Family will do everything in our power to have the street entertainers bylaw gone and there will be no bylaw to liberalize, and if it was liberalized it's only for the benefit of city hall, police officers and bylaw officers and not buskers. Councilor Unger is not busker friendly and should have nothing to do with buskers, Our attempt to have cultural apprieciation as buskers does not lie in the hands of 2 council members or one busker. Busking has been and is part of arts and culture and has been for hundreds of years but our municipal politicians refuse to acknowledge that fact. We will educate them very soon.
Tim Lander is the best known poet and busker in Nanaimo why does he not count as a busker to you? He and other buskers are working with these councilors [like them or not] to liberalize the by-law. Yes Unger is not freindly to most.
It would be the fastest the wheels of justice have ever moved if the busking bylaw was repealed in six months as you say.
If he has a licence he counts as a busker. Like I told you in my last post you seem to have not picked up on it yet Mr Younger there will be no bylaw to liberalize after we are done in court but I do applaud these so called buskers you speak of who are working with these councilors for the benefit of the bylaw office. It appears you have run out of things to talk about so now you are getting involved in busking which I am sure you know everything about and will steer us in the right direction. I look forward to hearing your next move for us buskers to take to liberalize busking in Nanaimo.
Check the last page on what I Know about busking. I also told you nine months ago that It would take you alot of work to change the busking by laws. Something that other buskers are doing without your help. Don`t put on me something you are not willing to do.
Personally I think you blew it when you told Dianne Johnstone as a delegate at a city council meeting when she asked you "some people don`t want amplification in Maffeo-Sutton Park."
Your response " they can go to another park if they want quite."
You think you can dictate what park people can use? That is not right and hurt your cause.
I received a letter from the Department of Motor Vehicles this week. Someone with your name lost their licence again. Someone with your name needs to stop using my address for bills/driving infractions.
I think you should
(a) Talk about what you know
(Piper and I have been doing busking research for many years. We can quote the bylaw chapter and verse). Can you?
I have been busking in Nanaimo for 25 years. I sat on every committee and was involved in the process. Were you?
(b) Stop talking about what you think you know.
There are many James Cunninghams. Piper has a valid drivers licence with an exemplary record. GOSSIP is for old ladies with nothing better to do.
(c) Remember that you are the "new kid on the block". Your opinion counts, certainly . However telling someone who is not your peer that you know it all does not serve my interests. it does little to facilitate discussion. If you were to bring facts to the table I would have a little more respect for your opinion. I have never seen you on the waterfront or at any ad hoc committtee meetings about busking .
(d)Work on your own causes. You are not a busker. I will definitely consider your input on the subject when you have done your homework or gone out and busked for a few years.
Whats wrong Mr Younger are you lacking attention? I really don't need you to tell me what it will take to change the busking bylaw I get that advice from my lawyer but you are more than welcome to contribute to to his costs. As for amplification just so you know I don't need it My concern was that some are allowed and some aren't it's discrimination. The only thing that hurt my cause was the existing busking bylaw which will be changed or elliminated. And as for my driving licence I have it in my pocket so you must be mistaken may I suguest if you get mail for someone at your address that you send it back rather than bringing it onto this thread, I have no control over what mail arrives at your home no more than you can control the mail I get at mine. I's really not your business about my driving record but I will tell you that I have only had 2 speeding tickets in 27 years and I can post my driving abstract if it will make you feel better.
Actually Dianne was asking about people who thought they could sing and shouldnt there be something done to prevent that. I wasnt good with the go to a quieter park part either, but Gordon Fuller later explained that a bad singer would not get money and would soon stop busking, as a statement about how buskers can regulate themselves. Gordon know some about busking and the way it works and was able to correct what seemed to be a thoughtless statement.
