The village of Packwood, WA does the same thing, or they certainly used to up to a few years ago, and they'd been doing it for years. They close down their entire mainstreet and turn it into a garage sale, plus people who really are selling out of their garages and driveways on the side streets. It's a great idea and was a tradition in Packwood. But Packwood is much, much smaller than Port Alberni. It's been a tremendous success for them.

Dang! We need something like this in Nanaimo!!!

    Default That's an impressive lineup . . .

you've got going! In Packwood, it got so big that you basically surrender your car to the fire department as you enter town, and they "valet park" it at no cost, but donations to the fund for burn victims are accepted, as I recall, but not expected. Then they bring your car back to you when you're ready to leave. The State Patrol diverts traffic around the town. They've got it completely organized, but as I said I haven't been to it in about seven years, but I can't see any reason why they should have stopped doing it. Packwood would be about the size of Chemainus, maybe even smaller, and people travel from all over Washington state to attend it, both buyers and sellers.

Packwood was the first place I ever ate bannock as a dessert-type thing. Before that, it had always been with meat or something. But there was a guy there turning it out as fast as he could, putting melted butter, brown sugar and cinnamon on it. Fantastic!

It's fantastic to see, it really is. It would be like completely closing down Commercial and a couple of other streets and just going for it. Probably wouldn't make it past city council, 'tho.

Best of luck to Port Alberni!

LOL! Hopefully ours will be that big once the town figures it out!

...and for the best bannock in town, go to the bottom of Johnston rd (heading to Tofino) and turn left. The Cup and Saucer Eatery has bannock with the soups and chili. soooo good!!!
