Of course, it is hearsay because our Mayor is keeping his mouth shut. The information posted here is mostly from the newspapers with some added speculation.

Without a Court of Law or absolute proof; then speculation is at this time all we have!
Speculation does not mean that one is incorrect.
When Council shuts down factual converstation by denying information then let the speculation prevail..

I think it is standard procedure to avoid comments until things are finalized and acceptance has been signed. It is a privacy right of those involved until things are at a final, signed stage. So speculate, imagine but time will prevail it to you. Just be patient!! HAHA

If my sources are correct ; this could take a long time to "finalise".

Probably, after 30yrs of employment I would get all that is deserved! That is the way it is and he deserves it!

If they think he is not worth his salts, they should have done something sooner?

They can put pressure on you to quit, but a smart one knows its rights!

    Default Bulletin gets it right

It seems that the Nanaimo New Bulletin got the Jerry Berry story right with answers that many were asking.

The Daily News, on the other hand, got it all mixed up creating speculation and conspiracy theories.

Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan admits the timing of the retirement of city manager Jerry Berry appears sudden and created speculation of something sinister. He did not get fired,” said Ruttan.

“It appears to be a sudden decision, but the thought process was ongoing for several months,” said Ruttan. “Yes, there have been challenges and disagreements between council and staff over time, but this was entirely Jerry’s decision.” Council initiated a review of senior staff wages in July and Ruttan said Berry’s retirement was part and parcel of that.

Al Kenning, city deputy manager, was appointed acting city manager. “It’s my expectation Al would stay on in that position, but that needs to be negotiated as well,” said Ruttan. Nanaimo is very fortunate to have a capable senior staff. Working without Jerry will be a challenge but they feel they’re up to it."

Well the Daily New's POS editorial has dragged me back. Gee whiz, the new Mayor won't break confidences, he won't discuss private matters until the exit is finalized, ergo, according to the Daily Snooze, the new Mayor lacks backbone and fails as a leader.... what a crock!

The Daily Snooze is well aware that Council is not required to discuss matters related to finances, and bravo to both Berry and Council for not allowing the media to drag the severance negotiations into the media.

Rest assured that the current Council will negotiate, to the best of their ability, to provide Berry a fair package that fits within the legal framework of his existing employment contract that was drafted and approved by previous Council, not Ruttan and the current council.

It is laughable that after spending the last 10 months attempting to undermine the new Mayor while at the same time providing the old washed up Mayor a vehicle to stay in the limelight by going to Korpan for a quote every chance it gets now cries foul because Ruttan won't feed the Beast.

It is no secret that management at the Daily loves the days of old when Korpan and the old guard ran the show, but those days are gone.

And that is very likely the impetus for Berry's departure. The writing was on the wall. Gone are the days where Jerry could get his way. He was constantly drafting reports to guide council to decisions he liked.

Only 4 years ago Berry was looking for work elsewhere, at one point he offered his resignation before but the council of the day convinced him to stay.

There are some on Council that do not care for Berry, one member of Council was fired by Berry several years ago so I am sure there is some animosity remaining there.

So perhaps the simplist answer is the correct one; Berry who has made a lot of money while working for the City has decided that he has had enough and once he came to that decision personally he felt there was no reason to stay. So why not make the cut quick and move on. Heck he stands to make something close to $400,000 in severance alone. Not bad money for quitting.

In that case, is it also a case of Ruttan not giving the true facts and information to the Daily News but making sure that the Bulletin got the right information. Or is it because Unger used to be involved with the Bulletin before he got elected? Is the reason for Berry's departure because of his handling of the Kipp situation with the Emergency Response Team for Earthquakes etc. years ago? Is all of this because Ruttan beat Korpan so the new council is all of sudden booting out the Korpan staff? If it is, welcome back to the political interference days that we got rid of during the Roberts' days (the only thing Grahame did other then change our nickname). Oh yah, Grahame also did the right thing by moving south Great modelling career Grahame!
