BC Legislature November 05 2009
On Thursday 05 November 2009 there will be a gathering to protest the HST on the steps of the Victoria Legislature at Noon until 2:00pm
This gathering is being organized by the BC Refederation Party. However, we are inviting all parties, groups, businesses, organizations , and individuals that are against the HST to join us and speak out on this issue. We believe that this issue transcends party lines and is something that requires a unified effort of the people of British Columbia.
Bring friends, family, bring your party, or organization signs.
Ask Gordo to order up some nice weather for us!
Pizzas all around would be nice! But rain or shine I shall be there. I want to tell my kids and their kids that I did try.
Anyone that belly aches to me about anything regarding the state of this province or nation for that matter, first thing I will ask is "what are you doing about it beyond whining?"
Pizzas good and Romeos started in Victoria, and they deliver!
If this battle is best won by transcending party lines, I think it is advisable to have everyone's efforts thrown into support of the "No HST" organization. Yes, the ReFed Party has every right to demonstrate or rally. No one could deny that. But as I see it, if the ReFed Party becomes too clearly identified as an opponent of HST, it may be seen by some as the primary mover against HST, and that's going to kill off some of the support. At this point, and for some time in the future, every single supporter of the "No HST" group is going to be important for the defeat of HST.

Read the notice again!
It is inviting ALL parties, ALL organizations (including fight HST), ALL businesses, and ALL individuals that are OPPOSED to the HST to attend, and to speak, and to bring their party signs.
Invites have been and continue to be sent out to NDP, Conservatives, to organizations, to unions, to individuals.
Since 19 September nothing else is planned by any party, group, organization or individual that I know of. If fight HST has a meeting give me the dates we will be there with support. We secured the legislature for 05 November because of it's symbolism.
I do not see any other group taking the initiative to book the legislature the very heart of the government that is implementing this tax. The Fight HST group have been invited, in fact they were the first to be invited before any other approaches were made. Personally I don't give a damn who organizes meetings as long as they do it!
Refed wants to keep the momentum going right up to March when the signatures are to be collected in the respective ed's. We want to ensure that the 10% threshold is exceeded. We are 100% behind the peoples initiative which was originally begun by Mr. Vander Zalm, because people having the power to veto BAD legislation is at the very core of our policy.
This tax has far reaching consequences, two countries in Europe already have 25% VAT UK I believe is at 17% do you think for one moment once the Feds get control of our provincial taxes they are going to do us any favours? They are already using our BC taxes to sell this to us.
Will we spend our efforts knit picking in a forum or will we expend our efforts on fighting the HST?
With respect to Mafeo Park meeting. Had two, three or four NDP members shown up we would have welcomed them with open arms the fact that they didn't cannot be attributed to refed. Two conservative members were invited and declined. The greens were not invited since they have stated that they are in favour of the HST. What people perceive cannot dictate our actions. The only reason the refed was a majority at Maffeo (all two of them) was because of the absence of other speakers. Many people from different groups who were (so called) opposed to this tax were invited and decided in their words "to wait and see" Wait and see what?
This back and fourth regarding who had the most people at the meeting is reminiscent of the Korean peace talks in Panmunjom when the US, and allied delegates argued with the North Korean delegates for several days about the shape of the negotiating table because they didn't want two many delegates from one side facing the delegates on the other side.
In the meantime soldiers were dying while taking a piece of real estate called Pork Chop hill. Once they took the hill after many casualties both sides left the hill. Proving that some things are just futile.
This is not about politics or parties . this is about a tax which affects youthe consumer and me the person who is going to psy the tax.

We need to speak up, we need to make our elected politians be accountable to us.
Who cares what party starts the dialogue. What matters is that we speak!
If no one talks no one will listen. We can make a difference. We should make a difference. If we dont try we are sheep. there is an opportunity here to cross all political borders and speak with one voice.
Do you want this tax? if you do speak up! If you dont speak out! We are the people. This is our province.
Get educated and learn . No one can stop this but you the people of BC,
it is not about partisan politics.
if you like the policies say nothing , if you dont, get out there and talk about it.
Silence may be golden but it sure doesnt change what is going on out there .
my livelihood is going to be affected
Yep, I read it again and am re fed up with the plugs put on by the re feds party attempt at non partisan efforts to organize anything. If they are sincere in their efforts they should be doing this type of event in co-ordination of the FIGHT HST committees which clearly have put together a plan of action rather then going off on their own, especially when they lack so much political savvy and experience. Again they are showing why so many are fed up with them.

If you've registered on the "No HST" site, you most likely received a copy to your personal e-mail address, too. I did.
And this is Canada, my friend. Run a quick poll and find out how many Canadians can tell you the historic significance of November 5th without checking Wikipedia or some other source. That reference will not be understood by most. It's important in politics to speak in language which people can easily connect to. Frank Ney, he of the "Welcome to Nanaimo, the sun porch of Canada" and "Here in Nanaimo we prefer corn to culture" understood that. Like him or not, he had a finger on the pulse of the people. Not a wise idea to hark back to days long gone in the mists of British history, particularly in a city where many people object to the use of the name "Empire Day" for a civic holiday.
(Two asides: It may be fortunate that you live in Canada--references to blowing up government buildings and members of government might not be so acceptable to our neighbours to the south, in their current state. And it's "nit-picking," not "knit-picking" and refers to removing head lice. I've never mentioned an error made by anyone ever before on this forum, and I don't intend to ever again, but I'm personally surprised that you would make a mistake like that.)
Please don't assume that because people may not be talking about their "No HST" activities on this forum that they are not actually doing anything. I believe many are.
What I'm trying to say is that things must be kept simple. This is the age of sound bites, photo ops and seven-minute attention spans (approximately--and it's the time between commercials on TV; we've become so programmed to that timing, that it's become the length of our attention spans.)
While I certainly respect your right to protest, rally, and demonstrate, I have some serious misgivings about the "No HST" movement becoming connected, in the minds of some people, with the ReFed Party. And that will cost the "No HST" organization some support, at a time when it is sorely needed. No matter what the facts of the matter may be, four friends who are fairly politically sophisticated and experienced came away from the Maffeo Sutton rally feeling that the "No HST" movement, at least in Nanaimo, was being hijacked by the ReFed Party. And, as I've said many times before, in politics, perception is everything.
Please, swing your support behind the "No HST" group and leave the ReFed Party identity behind for a while. You have a great deal of ability and political skill, and I truly believe that at this time it is best used by supporting them.
There is, I believe, a great deal of activity going on around the province, some in unexpected places. Some of the "good old boys" who now really are "old boys" are swinging back into action. Old friendships are being renewed. Plans are being made, in some cases in the meeting rooms of deluxe retirement homes in the interior. Never underestimate the elderly. We have experience, we've seen just about everything and done a lot of it, and with the end of the road looming ever nearer, we have nothing left to lose. And we're certainly willing to get up to Richard Nixon's "dirty tricks" if we have to. I am not saying that as any representation of any position of the "No HST" group which I believe would not ever espouse that. If you're a news junkie, you might have seen a TV report within the last week that you might connect with.

remember Remember the 5th of November.
A bigger celebration in the old country than Halloween as I remember.
