    Default Seniors Discounts in Nanaimo

This thread will build momentum as a list of Nanaimo area businesses offering discounts for seniors.

Folks, let's try not to inundate the thread with too many long dialogues about the businesses - that would make this less of a "list" and therefore less useful to readers. By all means, if you're inspired to write something lengthy about a particular business, start a new thread!

    Default ScotiaBank

I asked at age 59 when or if I would ever qualify for a seniors' discount, and discovered that I'd been qualified since 55. The only banking fees I pay are when I use an ATM at some other place than a ScotiaBank ATM. No monthly service charges. Free cheques (that's about once every four years--who uses them anymore?)

They will charge a $5 fee if you go into your overdraft in any month. I deal in cash and debit card, only use Visa or Mastercard in complete emergencies, discovered the $5 fee the only time I ever went into my O/D.

If, however, I'm messing around with GICs, then I pay. I think that's fair.

    Default AC Taxi

Offers 10% discount coupons at age 65. Make sure you ask for your discount slip at the end of each trip. Many drivers are so tactful that they may not want to "assume" that you're over 65 (maybe more so with female passengers ) You save them up, at some point give them to any driver, who will turn them in to the company office. You then receive, in effect, a credit that you "spend" on future trips.

As a "frequent flyer" with AC Taxi (two or three trips a week, sometimes more) I'm getting mine together, and I'll be riding free of charge for January, at least. Probably a lot longer.

And this may have changed, because this was quite some time ago. Went with a friend, asked that since I'd had my 60th birthday, did I get a seniors' discount?

Yes. One dollar off. I think that's fair. I figure they're operating on a pretty tight budget.

Default Two things about seniors' discounts . . .

    1. Always ask. Some people don't or won't, and they miss out. It's not something to be embarrassed about that you've made it this far. It's an achievement. Use it.

    2. This one is funny. Expect that younger friends are actually going to be a little ticked at you sometimes because you're getting a discount and they're not. The friend who was with me at the VIX actually was pissy because I got a dollar off and she didn't. My father (two years younger than my mother) and I were both a little resentful a million years ago at the Vancouver Aquarium because not only did my mother get a senior discount to enter, she even got to go to a much shorter line on a busy day set up specially for seniors.. She laughed her head off at us while she waited for us for about ten minutes until we paid. Good for her! Didn't think that at the time, 'tho.

Sorry--I realize I've gone off topic here. Promise I won't do it again. For maybe a week?

(Holy - I started this thread this morning and it's already #1 in Google for "seniors discounts nanaimo"! Why aren't advertisers beating down our door?!)

    Hotels with Seniors Discounts

I see that the Howard Johnson (by the Tally-Ho) and the Castaway Motel both offer seniors discounts.

Did we mention the popular MGM restarant on Friday nights?
