According to the news story in the nanaimo daily news concerning the move of the dollar store from port place mall to the conferance center, they mentioned renovations to port place mall will take between 15 and 20 years. Now in 20 years it will be 2030, and according to the plaque on front street downtown revitalization began in 1980.

So that will have taken " THEM " 50 years to accomplish what they're trying to do.
and how is it better now ??? No movie theater no bowling alley, no ice arena, theres no reason to go downtown whatsoever, if London drugs or thrifties foods decides to pull out of the mall cuz of the never ending renovations its the death of downtown
oh yeah and then theres that little matter of the empty A + B sound building which the mayor of nanaimo was at one point so desperate to get something done with-- etc etc etc

It will never be finished. There is never an end date cause when that comes there will be a new plan and then another and another. Revitalization will be going on long after we die and our kids die. It is progress. D'oh!

There is not enough parking downtown so if they remove the parking completely at London Drugs, I will not spend my money there. The places in Canada with London Drugs without parking lots have public transit that is a lot more wonderful than the transit we have. Our buses don't even go there, so we need parking. Do you bus in there from Cedar to buy your drugs?

Which Thriftie foods do not have parking lots?

You may think you know what makes things tick, but that don't mean others don't so jump off your pretentious horse and listen to others.

You and Korpan would be a lively pair because you both think it was Texaco while everyone else knows it was Shell Oil.

Yep one Thrifty store in Victoria that has no parking outside their door near the University and within spitting distance of acres of parking. Also the bus service there far surpasses what this city has.

Do you catch the bus into town to buy stuff or do you drive a truck?

Seems to me if London Drugs and Thrifty moved out alot more jobs lost for this new reviv. Glad I have no reason to go downtown. And yes the bus service totally, totally sucks in Nanaimo along with the downtown parking!

I love going downtown, esp. to the art gallery, book shops, concerts, and restaurants. Especially love the revitalized Old City Quarter area. I think it will only continue to be better. When I think what it used to be like 30 years ago, I can't get over the change

that would only be true if what they were doing is actually an improvement or progress-- they won't be happy until they've complelty destroyed the city or turned it into a ghost town, and that is not progress-- did you know the name of the new street that will be going where the mall was will be called HIGH STREET ?? isn't that a stupid name for that area, really stupid !!
i mean what reason would a family have to go downtown -- theres nothing to entice people downtown and when the new convention center opens in courtenay things will change for the worse even more

Wow, there are truly some negative attitudes in the crowd! When the college was changed to a university this city really began to change. It will continue to change in a positive direction for many years to come. Growth is inevitable and we should all look forward to a prosperous future.

You think? Get involved and foster the change so that the outcome is what was designed.
