    Nostra,

It is as with most things (speaking of Haiti) a matter of perception. Canada, BC and even little old Nanaimo has a need for charity, right now. The working poor (aka part time at WW et all) and those even less fortunate and yet we'd easily send money to a part of the world that surely needs it but as one must look and think, when the media finds something else to flock to as they all tend to will the global community still be there to rebuild that nation?

Ask yourself this, if we had a similar event (god forbid) would we see the same charity? Or because we are a "rich" nation we'd just have to deal with it ourselves? I don't know.

Now back to that bit about WW, true, we all seem to want cheap products for a low price but if we are to continue as our friends to the south and become a complete nation of consumers then we will suffer that same fate as they currently are with all sorts of problems. I think people just need to understand where their money goes and you'd really start to see that attitude change.

Nostra, I sincerely hope you didn't think I was implying you had no social conscience, just that I am a capitalist who would prefer to keep as much money in my own economy, when the option is available...and I completely understand that many people cannot afford that option..
I'm concerned about big powerful corporations controlling too many consumer goods & necessities, perhaps we should try to spread our purchasing power around as best we can.

I will not donate to help Haiti, or any other foreign country, until I'm satisfied that the hungry and homeless of Canada are provided for. Realistic enough to understand I will never see that in my lifetime.

    Well said. Neither will I

I out and out admit that I have very little social conscience, and I don't have a problem with that. No offence intended, as you've said, and none taken.

You are absolutely right. One is enough. I never shop in that place. There are many other Canadian stores here in Nanaimo where you can shop at really good prices. Just have to watch the flyers and in store specials. Thrifty's store right now has some great savings. No, I never shop at wally world.

    Default I shop at WW

I would love to see a mega WW here in Nanaimo.
The one in Duncan is great. Especially the grocery dept.
I go there every 2nd week. The produce is fresh, not like Superstore and cheaper. I don't think that it is imported from China either. Probably comes from Mexico and southern U.S.
Their deli is second to none with a wide selection of meats.
When I see a box of Cherrios on sale at Thrifties for $2.50, as I did at WW, I will gladly pick it up.
I guess that I have no social conscience either. The people that work their seem happy and I know of at least one that has worked in WW for over ten years so it can't be that bad.
BTW I don,t see what the pictures of the people of WW has to do with shopping there.

Well, that is truely sad. Not to knock you but in my opinion when we buy beyond the 100 mile diet we are killing local business. I understand that money / price may be the only factor here but think about the trucks on the road that deliver this stuff. How can these operators keep well maintained trucks on the road (our roads) with good brakes and transmissions plus the cost of fuel if all WW wants to do is keep making things cheaper? These truckers usually have local families as well, employ local mechanics and so on it goes.

When the price of fuel skyrockets (this is a fixed cost to truckers) when they are driving for $1 per mile (or something close to that) how do you think they feel when they have to put in 1100 L of diesel at $1.00+ per litre only to do it again in a few days - you can bet WW doesn't see the problem in that at all and doesn't pay any surcharges for it.

Sure this is my opinion but there is just so much wrong with how that company operates I just refuse to shop there. Again, personal choice but also fact based.
