Default Nanaimo - Floating cruise ship terminal planning scrapped

Federal approvals don't come in time to meet funding deadline

    Published: Thursday, April 01, 2010

The Nanaimo Port Authority has suspended the $22-million floating cruise ship terminal project because it has not received the federal environmental assessment permits required to proceed with tender and construction of the terminal.

"It's with a profound sense of disappointment that we've been forced to make the decision to suspend this project that's been six years in the planning," Bob Bennie, board chairman said in a press release Thursday.

Perhaps the board should re-think the strategy of stakeholder management. Read between the lines there and let me know what you think.

We need to stop the Snuneymuxw (Nanaimo) Nation from having too much control.

How much longer must we satisfy them for something that they agreed to a hundred plus years ago?

We do? And who is we? Too much control? What about that?

What agreement was that? And who is "them", as you say? And if the Nanaimo Indians owned the water front, let them have it back. I have no argument with that. Because they were here first.

The Saalequun Treaty (December 23, 1854) signed between the Nanoose Nation (which included the Snuneymuxw) was to secure land from Nations and ensure that it was available for settlement of the Colony of Vancouver Island.

However, since then the Aboriginal Nations say they mis-understood the Douglas Treaties. Thy claim that their ancestors believed they were entering into peace and friendship treaties, whereby they were agreeing to share the land with the settlers, not give it up.

Imagine if I sold you a watch years ago in exchange for $5 and today said that you misunderstood and I wanted $5 that day and another $5 on the anniversary each year.

The Snuneymuxw Nation today continues to try to renegotiate the deal made in 1854, while they expect to pay no income tax, pay no sales tax and get a government handout every month (along with rent-free housing) and although Viola Wise agreed to the Cruise Ship proposal, the new chief elected after Viola's unexpected death wants to negotiate the land being used for the proposal.

Is this part of the land settlements ever going to end,, I think not! I am not in a wise and knowledgeable position to say too much but I seem to detect some greed that is being carried on too far!

I wonder is Canada: Canadian or is it really owned and governed by the first settlers thus making Canada someother sort of Country. We live here, enjoy the lands and what is good for all should apply to those that want to live here. I may be wrong in my thinking but how many governments or controlling bodies do we need to get the work accomplished!?

Sorry if I have not said this right and in no way have made any comments to affend anyone!

This is all about planning. Proper planning with really skilled people (not trying to toot my own horn horn here) takes time, sometimes lots of it. Few people get that.

....what is missing here is the connection between the tax paying public and the closed door beuarucrats (?)....ask somebody who knows the ocean bottom well, ask the old timers what they think is feasable to attract tourists dollars.....ask the public if they think it will work in the long run....I am so glad that the old guys are leaving or retiring from the Harbours Board.... they are so set in their ways and do not like the new ideas.....sorry to be negative fellas, but it is a shame how things like this are so darn secret......who will come here to visit us anyways......even if they biuld it behind "Benson" it still won;t work......stan the man
