I hate this bush! It's not bad looking, but it stinks and sends out hundreds and hundreds of shoots! Further adding to its lack of charm is that it's hard to dig out and prune, and even seems to survive being sprayed with herbicide. What is it?

that looks like some sort of laurel - or at least that family.

Thanks; I thought so, too. Could it be a California laurel? I thought those smelled better (you are supposed to be able to use California laurel leaves in place of bay leaves --- but I wouldn't with these).
I have some of those in my back yard and I honesty thought they may be some form of a wild rotodemion ( sorry spelled wrong) and so I have let them grow. However I have never seen it flower so I am sure I am wrong.

Hmmm, invasive, resists attempts to be removed, stinks, no flowers for visual appeal...sounds like government LOL!
Seriously though, a local garden centre may be able to idenitify it with a sample....
I've heard of that plant being called False Rhododendron
I always thought that stuff was daphne.![]()
Sort of like the temporary income tax from the War Effort? It was such a good idea they just kept it going and now look where we are... It is like a bad rash, it never goes away.

My carpenter thought that, too --- however, when I looked up False Rhododendron, it shows nice flowers, which this one does not have. (It had greenish white small flowers that have now turned into black/purple berries).
I think it may be California laurel ; since none of us seem to know for sure, I'll take a sample in to the VIU plant sale tomorrow and see what they say![]()
