Speeding drivers in B.C. could lose cars

Drivers caught speeding excessively will risk having their cars impounded starting this month. The new punishment was announced by Solicitor General Mike de Jong.

Starting Sept. 20, a charge of excessive speeding will trigger a mandatory seven-day impoundment for a first offence, a 30-day impoundment for a second, and 60 days for subsequent excessive-speeding offences within two years, according to a news release from de Jong.

I wonder what is classified as excessive or what % over the speed limit?

Definitely turned into a Police State. Anyone else see all the cops downtown lately? Counted a dozen yesterday including 3-4 on bicycles.

Can you imagine the impound/storage fees on top of the fine. There will be cars up for auction!

Once again, some idiot politician that thinks this is a great idea but failed to actually seek legal council. The Police are A - under funded as it is and B- have much better things to do than now deal with tow trucks and so on.

Once again, there we go protecting ourselves from ourselves.

Give it up there Mikey! Once they find something wrong with your portfolio you'll be gone too...

Gordo, perhaps you want to do some damage control to the already messed up politics in this province as of late? Just a thought...

Just got this of the CBC News Report:

Starting Sept. 20, drivers caught going more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit will have their vehicle impounded for seven days, the provincial government announced Thursday.

Just got this off the CBC News Report:

Starting Sept. 20, drivers caught going more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit will have their vehicle impounded for seven days, the provincial government announced Thursday.

    Additional penalties

Impoundment will be in addition to existing penalties, which include:

    * A fine of $368 to $483, depending on how excessive the speed.
    * Three penalty points on the driver's licence.
    * An ICBC driver-risk premium of $320 a year for three years, over and above regular insurance premiums.

Street racers will also affected by the rule change. Under the new provisions, both drivers deemed to be involved in street racing will face minimum seven-day impoundments.

Street racing previously had a minimum impoundment period of 48 hours.

Additionally, the Motor Vehicle Act now makes careless acts such as excessive tailgating, and reckless driving actions such as wheelies and doughnuts subject to a seven-day impoundment, de Jong said.

I suppose one of the downside to this type of power is; it makes the police the Judge and Jury. It denies people the right to a defence. So what happened to the right to dispute within 30 days?

Don't get me wrong I am all for getting these bad drivers to adhere to the rules of the road for others safety.

Here is a very interesting old read I came across.
B.C. safety minister suspended from driving for 'excessive speeding'

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/bcvotes2009...n-driving.html

"I'm not proud of my driving record that triggered this prohibition. I take responsibility for it," van Dongen said.

Well I guess when you have the money to pay for it who cares. Yea right he takes full responsiblity! What an example! OOOO. One of our leaders cutting the grass to make the path.

I don't drive so I really don't care all that much, just curious to know if they will be applying this law to highway driving. Just a question.
Let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out
