My best guess is that someone's lawyered up or has threatened to.

I see the Nanaimo Daily New facebook site has also deleted all comments.

There is no time duration on the $124,989.55 restitution but the company can take further legal action to get its money back.
Now why would the judge not give some kind of timeframe. The victimized Company now has to spend time and money to further fight this if they decide to.

So much for free speech. Really, why even have a comment section on line if they delete them? The comments that I saw were peoples opionions and none were vicious or rude. They were just what people felt about what happened and how outraged they were at the sentence handed down compared to the crime. Some felt that there wasn't really anything wrong with her thievery which is a bit odd.

I read them all too and there were some very good views posted in my opinion. I am second guessing; but wonder if this thread will be shutdown because of our basic same opinions; along the same line voiced on the Nanaimo Daily News site. Not nearly as many posted here.

The best defence to accusations of libel is "truth". As for me, from looking through my posts in this thread, I haven't accused the person of doing anything other than what she's been convicted for.
....and I've been careful to keep my own speculation open-ended.

----------------------

It's too bad that the Daily News chose to delete their reader-comments. The reader comments were a pretty amazing show of outrage against this crime, and had many people reaching the same conclusion on how the Clippers have handled the situation.

They showed that lots of readers had the same reaction to the 1st story, which presumably prompted the 2nd story. And now that reaction is hidden away. Too bad.

Philip Wolf: Put a name on your comment

One of the best things about the Internet is that it serves as a vehicle for all kinds of intelligent, articulate people to share their viewpoints on an astonishing array of topics.

One of the worst things about the Internet is that it often serves as an instant spine for a bunch of cowards who love to take anonymous potshots at other people.

In recent days, we've seen a lot of that right here in Nanaimo.

Late last week, this publication detailed the story of a woman who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $124,000 from a previous client. Her current employer just happened to be this city's No. 1 sports franchise, the Nanaimo Clippers. In court to offer a letter of support for the woman was Bill Bestwick, the team's head coach and GM.

Making special note of said support, the judge did not sentence the woman to any jail time and the team chose to stand behind her, based on her "exemplary" job performance during her short stint with the club. (While under investigation and working for them at the time; this was a good angle in preparation for court)

Well, the jackals got hold of this story and the comments started flying in the Soundoff (online comments) area on our website. Some were legitimate, measured opinions from readers expressing their displeasure with the sentence itself, questioning the wisdom of the team in keeping the woman on (she has since resigned) and so forth. (what are jackals? and really who were they?)

That's fine by me. It wasn't the paper that created the trouble for the woman. It was the theft of $124,000, regardless of the circumstances.
( any crime committed has cirucumstances-it was against the law and a crime was commited against innocent people. Do we know how this has hurt the innocent business and the people that run this business and what it has done to them -probably hardships that they are forced to try and handle?)

But so many others were gratuitous shots, often from people with an obvious axe to grind and clowns determined to connect a bunch of dots that just weren't there. There were shots from people who would turn into a quivering pool of mush if they had to make the comments to Bestwick's face. (Allison created the mud of mush and brought a lot of innocent people into helping fix her dirty laundry but some do not want it aired out in fair and open discussions.)

It became a circus. The comments were shut down. (Circus in who's eyes- those that did not want to hear the opinions and truth)

Here's the thing. In this space every week, I make judgments and will often poke fun at people.

But when I do, you can always find my handsome mug and my contact information. If I say something you don't like, I'm easy to find. (But if you have something to say that does not fit with him you will delete or ignore it?)

Bestwick doesn't need me to defend him. If anything, he'll probably be sour with me for perpetuating this discourse. But I've seen how much this man has done for his team, his players and his community. It's the stuff no one hears about -- by design. (awe now it seems to make sense why you deleted the comments - did you not read the comments with an open mind?)

I know about the countless unreported charitable donations and other acts, the emotion that goes behind supporting his players. Some folks might only see the bellicose coach behind the bench or buy into the embellished tales they've heard from folks rankled by his success. (this news is not about him but Allison and you are focusing on it too much in the wrong way)

That's a shame. Under his watch, the Clippers truly have become a family. And standing behind your family, even in difficult times, is what was happening in this case. I admire that. ( Wow, words easily said -- remember our work place is our top family and will stand beside us even when our true blood will not-- very courageous statement)

If you disagree, tell me why. Just don't forget your name.
