Default Island Stir-Fry is tossing up a good meal

A little bit like a Mongolian Grill (Vancouver) meeting a version of The Noodle Box (Victoria) by way to Fort McMurray. Let me explain once I finish chowing down on zoodles of noodles with black bean & chilli and a tower of veggies. Justin Snook and partner Leah Wegreen had had enough of winters in Fort McMurray. They hit the road to seek a warmer (notice I did not say drier) life. Nanaimo is all the luckier for it. Located right beside Midland Tool on Terminal Avenue North, Island Stir-Fry is a fresh, fast & flavourful new addition to Nanaimo’s food scene. Whether in a box or on a plate, Island Stir fry is a fun healthy alternative to “you choose” fast food. You can either grab a bowl and make your own stir-fry combo from an array of meats, shrimp (need to ask for these as they cost extra), veggies, noodles or rice, then pick a sauce, hand the bowl to Justin, and away he goes. There is a monster wagon-wheel sized cast iron cook top cranked up hotter than the surface of the sun. Your custom order is tossed onto the cooking surface and flipped and flung about until done, then onto a plate (or a take-away box) and off you go. If you cannot decide, and you want them to make the decision, they have a few “house creations” that you can order such as a curry bowl with rice or a teriyaki house bowl. It’s all good and GREAT value as the prices are very reasonable. One small crazy thing is the parking and how you have to manoeuvre to get into the place if you are driving. You’ll find it and be happy you did.

Disappointed that something that sounds so good just opened though, as we are moving to 100 Mile shortly I hear there is also a rib joint opening soon.

I'll be sure to give it a try....I hope it's better priced than Mongolian Wok franchise though....you end up paying way too much in their restaurants...

Hey, I'm glad something like this has moved into that spot! I'll have to check it out - we're always wishing there were more places around town with fast, whole foods.

Finally made it in to Island Stir Fry today. The first word that comes to mind....YUMMY!!!!!!!! Very friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. Couldn't believe what the inside of the place looked like after practically living in Manzavino's in my teen years. The food was wonderful. I did a make your own stir fry. When I first got there, I was the only one in the place, but it was 3:00 in the afternoon. I was trying not to look to gluttonous so only took small helpings. After watching what the guys that came in behind me took, I realized at that point that I shouldn't have been embarrased about the amount of food.lol. Their bowls were beyond heaping. For $10.00 it was a wonderfully healthy and filling meal. Could have been 2 meals had I been more glottonous.lol. Very tasty. Many choices. Loved the fact that there is also a kids make your own stir fry as well. Can't wait to get back there. So sad that we are moving in a few weeks so better get as many visits in as I can.lol.
