I was thinking of opening a mobile concept to my existing fine dining personal chef business in Nanaimo. An adult structured hot dog and ice cream experience.

Gourmet hot dog wagon and gelato & sorbet cargo bike

What would you think of this concept, more then just basic dog's. Artisan buns and signature toppings.

    Examples :

    Reuben dog
    Tex Mex Chipotle dog
Salmon Fillet & Bok Choy Slaw dog
    Smoked Mozza dog
    Scallop & Bacon dog

As for the ice cream bike examples such as gourmet cones and also cups. Products all made in house.

    Brie & Apple Gelato
    Citrus Sorbet
    Orange Sambuca Gelato
    Wild Berry Italian Ice
    Grapefruit Granite

    Thanks for the thoughts

It almost sounds like a vendor operation and I wonder how the CITY OF NANAIMO would react to it. I personally would like to see this kind availability come back. It is great for tourism also.

If you can do it I see a big market for it - of course you have to be carefull to not price yourself out of the market. I mean, a gourmet hot dog is more appetizing than a regular old piece of mystery meat on a bun, but I can't image you can charge more than $5 for a hot dog and a pop sold from the back of a bike.

I'd walk five miles for good gelato. (Missing a shop on Commercial Drive, Vancouver.) And while the City of Nanaimo gets snarky with vendors--whatever happened with no more independent vendors at Maffeo-Sutton/Swyalana, and one centralized building?--and the City of Vancouver expands the number of street vendors and everyone loves it ! Typical of Nanaimo city council.

City of Nanaimo has the old runs hanging in and can not see what should come forward. We need the vendors to come back to the waterfront and into the downtown area. If we want to accommodate the tourist we have to be sincere in wanting them. Give the people what summer is all about. Outside entertainment along with outside eating. Oh my god, the smell of the outside cooking just enhances people to stay and the musicians play. All in all a nice stay in the open air.

I think this could be a profitable business, especially by Departure Bay Beach. In the summertime, the beach is always busy and so is the 7-11! There really is no competition in the area, and having access to good quality fast food would be welcomed! This is one area of Nanaimo that is very under used.

To be successful, you will likely have to expand to be at festivals and markets around Vancouver Island. There are a lot of music and other festivals you could be at.

    Definitely would be a customer; I love Japadog in Vancouver . . . http://www.japadog.com/menu/index.html

Agree with the comment about being careful not to overprice. Japadog's pricing is ~4-6 dollars per dog.
