Thread: Ships in Nanaimo

    Default Ships in Nanaimo

I photograph lots of ships that visit Nanaimo, so here's a thread for those kinds of photos from all of us.

    ===========
For starters, here's our June-July 2011 guest, the heavy-lift ship and the drilling-platform that she's carrying.
    - the drilling-platform is now at Duke Point getting repair work done.
    - I'm not sure if the heavy-lift ship is still off of Protection Island, or not.

Any weather is great cruise weather, especially on a fine ship such as the MV Sun Sea, flagship of Sri Lanka cruise-lines.
    - be sure to ask for their "Tiger special".

As seen a while ago on May 7, 2011, that smuggler ship is still nearby Nanaimo Shipyard.

    A contrast in cruise ships.
    - in the background is a ship suited for Alaska and inside-passage.
....but if you want to cross the open Pacific in all sorts of weather with a full load of passengers, you need a ship like the Sun Sea.

    Great pictures Fulgel Horn.
Don't know if you have heard about this site, but it is great for tracking ships anywhere in the world. Here's the paste for Vancouver Island. Just zoom into what area you want to view. It will give you the vessels name, description, destination, speed, etc.

Thanks Karen. I use Siitech quite a bit, and find it really interesting to see which ships are in our area. On more than one occasion, it's allowed me to be in the right-place at right-time to photograph a ship that I was interested in. Really fun technology.

Celebrity Millennium in Nanaimo for the day on September 10, 2011.

She was scheduled to arrive at 7:00am.
    - as of 9:00pm the previous night, she was idling in Georgia Strait, off of Nanaimo.
    - when I arrived at the waterfront at 6:30am, she was already tied-up at the cruise-ship berth.

There's a helicopter in the air, visible aft of the ship's mast (very small in this photo).
    - the chopper was buzzing around the harbour, likely doing a photo shoot on such a lovely morning.

Walked the whole waterfront; starting at the park onward. Walked with my new student from Brazil and he said the waterfront was absolutely beautiful. We walked the whole part down to Cameron Island and then up around the downtown area. I really have to say the downtown area has a real ways to go before it is somewhat even remote *awesome?* Shopping in downtown Naniamo really needs work!!!!!!!

Loved seeing the cruise ship in this weekend. Awesome to see.
