Thread: Aerial photos of old Nanaimo

Default Aerial photos of old Nanaimo

Here is an aerial view of downtown Nanaimo ca. 1940. There is a myriad of details to see.

A few that catch my attention:

The coal wharfs are in operation.
    The bastion is visible. (B)
A CPR steam ship is at the terminal. (O)
Two steam powered passenger trains are at the station. (S) If you zoom in you can steam escaping from the southbound locomotive.
The is an engine house (for locomotives) at X. It has a transfer table rather than a turntable.
The photo for my avatar was taken somewhere near the T.
There is a structure at the intersection at A. I have a vague recollection that it was access to underground public washrooms. Perhaps someone can confirm that.

The Pygmy Pavilion is the building with the striped roof. Stewart and Hudson building supplies is the large building on Terminal Avenue right above the pavilion.

Here is a photo taken at a higher altitude. Chinatown is the densely packed buildings right of centre. Imagine how easily the fire spread when the buildings burned in 1960.

Great photo. Amazing to see all that open space in Harewood. I can see my family home with just fields behind. Sure not like that now!

    Thanks for the photos Steamer-49.

Finally a picture showing location of the Horse racing track at the old Cricket Grounds(Robins Park)

If I can find them I have some aerial photos of Nanaimo from the late 50's(?)that I found as a kid in the 70's.

I would have to get someone to scan them on to the computer for me though.

If you have these shots in a larger format I'd love to see them.

Nice that the photo provides a personal connection.
Yes, not like that now is right! 70 years of progress it is said. Imagine the next 70!

    You're welcome!
Thanks for mentioning the Cricket Grounds. I had not made that connection.
Would love to see the photos from the 50s!

    The present format is actual size. (7.5" X 9" @ 300 dpi).
Did you try zooming in? I thought the detail is quite good considering the old photos are somewhat fuzzy.
If you can describe an area that interests you, I could scan that portion of the photo. That might give more detail.

A few more aerial photos; one featuring the #1 Esplanade Mine at the bottom edge and other showing the Millstream.

Interesting seeing the road/trail from Dean Man's Cave to "Old" Victoria Road.
