Default Nanaimo officials say ferry cuts could be 'damaging'

Most of Nanaimo's business and political leaders agree that any cuts to the region's ferry systems would be devastating to the city, which is already continuing to struggle through hard economic times.

"The ferry system is the lifeline for all of Vancouver Island, not just Nanaimo, and it would be severely damaging to everyone if we see cuts to the ferry systems," said Nanaimo city councillor Merv Unger. "I would encourage Island communities to make lots of noise on this issue. We can't just sit still and do nothing while this is happening."

"With more than 750,000 people on the Island, these ferry services are essential here and they should be considered part of the province's highway system," Wells said.
