Small print on the upper side of the line where I have labelled "Departure Bay Road" in red says "Road To Departure Bay". The Wellington Collieries Railway can be seen on the map near the shore of Long Lake.

The same map can be seen on page 149 (page 40 is you are logged in) of "Cool Underground Tunnels & Nanaimo Old Mine Shafts" superimposed on a google image. You will see that Norwell and Departure Bay roads line up quite nicely.

    Give em hell!!!

A look at Steamers map confirms what I said about Nicol continuing on straight, as I mentioned in a previous post, did not continue to Old Victoria Rd though, as mentioned before

Here is a photo that might answer some questions. Now I am intrigued about the route of the "Old Victoria Road". My guess, and it is only a quess, is that the route followed the blue Xs. You will have to zoom in.

I think you are correct here. It appears as though they must have realigned the View st intersection to line up with Old Victoria at some point. View St does not go any where after 7th, where in this photo, they line up. At the far end of Old Victoria, out of the pic, sort of, they must have made a turn to the left, to intersect the new highway. Old Victoria does continue on further, still today, as in the photo. Looks as though there was a connecter between Old Victoria and Nicol St near where the Petroglyph Animal hospital is now. Interesting photos, keep em coming!!

Yes, old aerial photos can serve as time machines. I have stared into the old photos many times paying most attention to the railways. This is the first time Old Victoria Road has been the centre of attention.

That is an interesting observation about View St. ending at 7th compared with the old photo. Cases like that make photos invaluable. That old connector you mention near the animal hospital did catch my attention. I went to Google Maps for a look to refresh my memory. I thought that old connector is in the cobwebs of my memory but it appears to have been long gone. It is nice that you agree with my speculation about the route of Old Victoria Road.

As for keeping the photos coming, there ain't many more! Since you are interested, here is another to peer into but it does not add much more to the story. It does illustrate approximately 10 years of development, though.
