Thread: Aerial Photos of BC from 1940's and 1950's

Default Aerial Photos of BC from 1940's and 1950's

Several months back my father passed away and while cleaning out his place, we came across thousands of aerial photographs of BC. Most of them from the 1940's and 1950's. I've always had a fascination with vintage photos, so I started scanning them and putting them on a web site.

There are several shots of Nanaimo in the collection. I just finished scanned the first one, it's available here: http://vintageairphotos.com/55-7/

I've been trying to post a new photo every few days. Be sure to actually click on the images, you'll be able to zoom way in and see a lot more detail.

    Default Nanaimo 1955

That photo is marvellous! Thanks for letting us have a look. Now I can hardly wait to see the others.
A few things caught my eye. Surprisingly, the collieries engine house was still standing in 1955. The locomotive in my avatar would have called that building home. Also, I have a vague recollection of the public washrooms in the middle of the intersection at the end of Albert Street. Your photo is the only one I recall seeing showing the washrooms.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm trying to finish another Victoria photo for tonight, but then I'll see what else I can find of Nanaimo.

Here's another Nanaimo image I found. It's of the Eureka Sawmill looking north towards the city. It was taken in 1947.
