    Default Danforth Deli Downtown

Couple of weeks ago, I had a Montreal smoked meat sandwich at Danforth Deli & Grill downtown. It was very good and I am looking forward to trying more.

The owner was very friendly and we had a great chat.

And, very unusual for me as a professional Internet marketer, but they actually have a nice web site!

(I am not affiliated with Danforth and I did not do their web site. I just like them)

Are the sandwiches built as in montreal, or are they taking a slab and slicing it on a machine? Are the slabs kept in a mild steamer covered with a towel and hand sliced as required? Is the meat prepared in Montreal? The real preparers in Montreal are highly sought after and are really highly paid. If you havn't had a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartze's, Dunn's, Nickel's or Ben's in Montreal, you don't know what you're missing. The only "good" sandwich I've had in BC was at Phat Phils in Richmond years ago, but they closed.
    Time will tell.

If they are not made this way, they are not the real thing, Note that in the 3rd vid that the meat is taken from a steamer. If precut, it's just another dry sandwich.

I haven't eaten there yet but am quite close to an employee. The food sounds very delicious and I know that the breads are amazing.

Thanks for the tip about Danforth. I am kind of hooked on the deli at the new Fairway market in Country Club mall. You serve yourself and pay by the weight. It's fast and good for when I am on the run and in that area.

Yo - Ben's is no longer in Montreal. And no you will never experience Montreal in Nanaimo. However you can still get great eats here! The cheese produced here on the Island is just infallible.

    Cheers~

Default Expensive considering what you get

I bought some Quebec cheeses at Danforth once some time ago and, although they were expensive, I was quite happy with the quality. When my husband went out to downtown a week or so ago, I asked him to pick up sandwiches for our lunch there to try their food. It was a huge mistake.

He bought a couple of chicken sandwiches, each cost about $7.00 (or it could be slightly higher), but they consisted of a few pieces of shredded chicken with two very thin slices of tomato and a few pieces of lettuce on a horrible, squashy, mass-manufactured type small hamburger bun (see photo). It was very bland and also small, and it was not worth for the money at all. My husband was shocked when he opened the package at home, as it looked like a $4.00 school cafeteria sandwich.

We usually go to Bodhi’s bakery on Rutherford Rd. to buy take-out sandwiches, and theirs cost less than $6.00 but the size, the quality of ingredients, and the taste are far superior to the ones we bought from Danforth. So, I regretted very much for having suggested my husband to go to Danforth instead.

After this experience, I don’t think we will go back there, even to buy cheeses.

re: "and a few pieces of lettuce on a horrible, squashy, mass-manufactured type small hamburger bun (see photo)."

We regret that you did not appreciate our home made and baked buns which we have never heard described as bland as of yet. Please contact us at the deli and we would be happy to comp you another lunch as it sounds as if this is perhaps your first taste of our sandwiches. Our chicken is also roasted in house and should have been portioned at 80g which is generally considered substantial. The 'lettuce' is actually all organic greens with a mix of different salad greens. The tomatoes are BC hothouse.

We also are unsure why you would not consider buying high quality Quebec cheese based on not enjoying your sandwich - care to elaborate? We have some lovely organic raw milk blue cheese in from Quebec, along with some very fine other cheese which you will not find anywhere else on the Island.

Again, please contact us so we can make you another complimentary sandwich, perhaps the cook that day wasn't spot on. Cheers!

I "like" your response Danforth Deli...now where's that "like" button. I'll have to check you out next time I'm downtown.

Big time kudo's to Danforth for apologizing and offering a complimentary lunch - I usually try a place at least twice before I form an opinion
