Default Where do young people hang out? [help]

Where do young people hang out in this city? I'm in my early 20's, just trying to get over my crippling shyness / social anxiety, and make some friends! (And eventually, perhaps meet people of the opposite sex, but overcoming my social anxiety is the top priority.)

I went into the Starbucks at Woodgrove mall, looked around and everyone was a senior or at least middle-aged. Went into a nearby pub one evening recently, it was almost completely empty except for a few older folks and one young-ish girl. It's like this everywhere I go, and regardless of whether school is in or not. Does everyone in their 20's just **** off to Vancouver or Victoria whenever they get the chance or something?

Where can I meet friendly young ("under 30" is a good start...) people in a casual/relaxed environment and hang out maybe open up to people? By relaxed I mean I prefer not being surrounded by tons of loud energetic people who will think I'm a weirdo for just wanting to hang out and talk and not including "skydiving and 4x4ing" among my hobbies ... although at this point, I can't exactly be fussy about my options.

I have a 19, 22 and 23 year old, and they love Nanaimo because of all the things for them to do. The "clubs" downtown seem to be a place for the young ones to spend evenings. I suppose it really depends on what you like to do. The University attracts many young adults here. I would suggest joining an activity like beach volleyball, kayak club, etc.

I know what you are saying about just hanging out. The area is filled with people who come here for a vacation of fun and sun.

How about hanging out at Rathtrevor beach, I am sure there are lots of younger people around hanging out on the beach. The sandcastle building contest is on this week I think.

If you don't drive, you can check to see if a bus comes out to Parksville. Make sure that you check to see if the route goes to Rathtrevor, it is a ways from downtown Parksville . Transit busses are pretty cheap to travel on.

Try the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre at 9PM most nights. There is a special where you can swim for $3 plus 25 cents for a locker. I see lots of young people there.

What are your hobbies? That can help you find other like-minded people.
